Well, maybe you can use the wires, but how do the speakers sound? The 840 was one of the ones I listened to before making a choice. Typical of the small speaker type, it had little to no bass, and a tinny high range. For me, the onkyo was a much better system. I am not the only one. Check the Circuit City reviews - more than one actually returned the Sony to get the Onkyo. Still, listen to all you can before deciding. The Sony may be the one you like. I'm happy with the Onkyo 650. I'd rather replace crappy wires than crappy speakers.

Check the circuit city reviews on the HTB-505 It is their highest rated system. You can get more for less.
