It says that Dolby Pro Logic II turns virtuall any stereo source in 5.1 surround sound. Does this mean that I can use the audio out on my cable box to get 5.1 sound through Dolby Pro Logic II on any channel? I know you need a digital connection for Dolby Digital but what about PLII? Thanks for the help.

J.B. I have the audio outs of my cable box hooked to my Sony TV & TV audio outs to my Onkyo A/V receiver and am able to get Dolby Pro Logic II for all cable TV as well as & videos on the VCR --get surround sound from all 5 speakers. I can choose from music or movie mode in DPL II depending on what type of movie is playing.

Yes, DPLII will turn any two channel source into 5.1 channels. DPLII is a pseudo surround algorithm. It uses some matrix decoding function (Pro Logic II) to try to make a "best guess" on how to play two channel stereo through 5.1 speakers. It works pretty well but is no where near as "surround" as Dolby Digital which has 5.1 discrete channels. It can't be because it is only using two channels as a source. It does, however, give a much better overall atmosphere to two channel sources like that which you might get from a video tape or cable.
