I'm thinking about getting the HT-S650 for my parents, who will be using it for music most of the time. It's probably going to go in the cathedral ceiling room diagramed below. Given the odd configuration of places they could but the speakers (S) at least a couple feet up, would if be better just to go with two floor standing mains for the same amount of money? If you think the 650 would work out better, how is the arrangement going to work out as far as speaker placement, or doesn't that matter? The rest of the house is down on this page, if that's any help. The room is about 18' by 25'.

The best deal on one of these is to do the msn wallet thing @ CC, right?
BTW, can you PM CC to the $434 soundcity price and then do msn?

Most music diehards prefer stereo.
For music 2 excellent speakers will sound way better than 5.1 mediocre ones.
For good stereo music sound, you could pick up the same receiver (Onkyo TX-SR500) and a pair of Polk RTi28's at CC for about the same price. Well, slightly more but...the Polk's will smoke the Onkyo speakers for sound quality.
No surround, but better music from speakers they'll want to hold on to. And they always have the option of adding center + surrounds later. -po
