When hooking up a DVD player to a home theater receiver using the coaxial plugs, does the kind and quality of cable used really make a difference? Most of the time manufacturers recommend a digital coaxial cable which costs considerably more than video cable. I have a very cheap 5.1 receiver hooked up to a dvd player with a video cable (supplied with the dvd player) via the coaxial plugs. Occasionally, the sound volume level changes (starts off low, then switches and gets very loud). I'm wondering if it is a problem with the cheapo receiver, or if the lesser quality cable could cause this to happen. THANKS for any feedback!

expensive cables or for that matter, cheap cables, will not make a difference on a low end system.

A normal video cable will work fine for digital audio, low-fi and hi-fi alike. By your description of the trouble you are having, it does not sound like a cable issue, but your recevier as you suspected.
