Connecting front speakers to two amps (5.1 & stereo)

Hi there, I recently bought a new stereo amplifier and cd player to compliment an existing DVD and 5.1 digital amp system. Since I'd like to minimise clutter and I already have very good front speakers I'd like to use these both when watching a DVD or playing music. I went to the local music store today and wa told that this was not possible! Any tips would be really appreciated
