New member Username: Matt_maglieriPost Number: 1 Registered: May-05 | Hi, I am purchasing my first "real" home theatre in a few days. I just recently purchased an Athena Micra 6 5.1 speaker system. I still have to pick out an reciever in the next few days. I have two older KLH floor speakers with the following specifications that are not being used: Maximum input: 290 watts Minimun/ Maximum RMS: 3-150 watts Woofer: 12" Polymer Midrange Hemi-Dome: 4" Tweeter: 1" Soft Dome I have my reciever narrowed down to the Yamaha 6.1 5850S and the Sony 7.1 STR-DE697. Up until now I was planning to just use the Yamaha with my new Athena speakers, but then I thought about my two old KLH speakers and came across the Sony 7.1 How do you recommend I setup the room? Do I use the Athena 5.1 system by itself? Use one of the KLH as a rear speaker on a 6.1 system? Or use both of the KLH's on the Sony 7.1 system.? Also does anyone know anything about these two recievers? I have heard good things for both but the Sony is $100 cheaper than the Yamaha and it's 7.1. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

Mate I'm running the old Kenwood KRF-X9050D THX select Dolby digital and DTS, if I where to change my AVR tomorrow I'll go for this Yamaha RX-V2400, Or the Kenwood http://www.audiorevolution.com/equip/kenwoodvr5700/ Maybe a little over priced though... Or why not this Kenwood a little down to earth in the price range http://www.laaudiofile.com/vr8070.html So have a read on the list I have sent you and purse... ...for one moment and say should I go left, or should I go right? Give me some feedback Ashley. |

The problem is that i'm on a very limited budget and the moment and I'm pretty much stuck with recievers of a limited price range. My main question is whether or not to use my old speakers as part of my new system, I assume the answer would be to use them, but I'm not sure. Thanks again, Matt |

New member Username: Matt_maglieriPost Number: 3 Registered: May-05 | Thanks, I was just making sure that it would be wise to add in two different speakers into a set designed to work with eachother. Like I said, I'm new to this, thanks for clearing that up. Should I experiment to see if the KLH's sound better as fronts or as backs? Or will they most likely work best as fronts? Thanks again, Matt |

Ideally, your largest speakers capable of the greatest output should be used as fronts because they carry the greatest workload and make the largest impact. If HT is your interest, a good sub will also be an important component in the mix. Possibly even moreso than the fronts if 'big' sound is your thing. |

If you can get hold of another matching one for the centre channel WOW is what you will be saying, and we won't hear from you for weeks as you will be so deep, deep into the film. So plan to get some new ones three matching ones for the screen channels Bass is all so very heavy in the centre channel and if the centre channel is too small, or if you haven't got matching loudspeakers the magic of home cinema is weak sounding. And lost voicing will be pretty close and you will have to apply EQ to the screen channels as they will be in different parts of the room, the left and right will be against two room boundaries the back wall and the side wall, this adds a around 6db gain and the centre channel is only against one boundary the wall, and if you where too do and A&B test using a RTA and a sound level meter, you will see the differences between the sides and the centre playing say some dialogue or a sound effect in mono and sending it to the left centre and right of plan ole pink noise wideband. Give the screen channels some thinking and if you are a die hard guy who like me likes cinema sound, and the home cinema should comply with the standards to the level that all matching loudspeakers, good bookshelf ones floor standing or the real McCoy if the room is bigger, enough to take them. I'm getting away with just one big JBL 4645 THX cinema approved one that most of my friends say still can't get over the size of it, WOW! Matching fronts, yeses.... |
