or does it decode a special low freq signal from the surround receiver? I have a Sony STRDE597 and I wanted to plug in an old speaker I have to the subwoofer. Problem is there is no sound being played using the test tone function on the receiver.

If you plug a regular speaker to the subwoofer output of the receiver, no sound will come out from the speaker. The sub has to be active, which means that it must have its own built in amplifier to amplify the receiver's signal. Even if your regular speaker was active, it doesn't have the qualities that a regular sub has to reproduce the low frequency signal accurately.
