Posted this in receiver forum and got mixed reviews - what do you think?

Just got my Rotel 1056. I have questions about DVD hook up. Previously my DVD component video went straight from the DVD player to the TV. I split the analog audio outputs so that one went staight to the TV (wife could easily watch a DVD) and one went to my old 2 channel receiver (I could have bigger sound when I wanted it).

Now I'm planning to do the same with the component video. The instructions seem to indicate a preference for running the component video through the reciever. That would make it easier for some things, but my wife would prefer the option of a straight connection to the TV. In order to use the on screen programming on the Rotel I'd run a composite video or s-video cable from the reciever to the TV.

Audio wise I was going to run a digital optical cable from the DVD to the receiver - theoretically this should be the best connection (right?). I'd also run stereo analog RCA cables directly between the DVD and TV to provide audio when my wife bypasses the Rotel.

Is this logic flawed? Please let me know if you have a better plan or I'm missing something.

Thanks

If I were you I would just run the component cables straight from your DVD player to the TV. The only reason I use my receiver is because I only have two component inputs on my tv and I have three things (high def cable, xbox, and DVD player) with componenet outputs. That way I can run two of those things into the receiver's component in's and just one set of component cables from the receiver's out to the tv's in. So unless you have too many things with component outputs, I don't see any reason for running the video from your dvd player through your receiver.
In answer to your question about the digital optical cable, yes that is going to be the best connection, though you would be just fine with a coaxial digital cable. Good luck

David

Thanks. I did most of my cabling yesterday. It's a long story but I ended up running things through the receiver. It would have been easier to run it straight from DVD to TV and when I change some of my other cables next weekend I'll probably change that too.

Thanks

David, I'm in the same situation as you are. I have three things (HD cable box, xbox and DVD) with component outputs. I currently have the DVD and cable box using the 2 components behind the tv. I'm switching back and forth to play xbox with the DVD. How do I set it up where I would run the two things through the receiver? Are the two things that go through the receiver the DVD and XBOX? and the Cable box stays where it's at? Thank you. aileen
