Help with Speaker Decision

I currently own a 70s vintage pair of Ohm-H speakers, which I have never been happy with. I am thinking about a system upgrade and anticipate purchase of something like a Yamaha 1400, or comparable NAD or Denon. I am interested in speaker recommendations. I would like to begin with a pair of new floor-standing speakers that would pair up well with these receivers ... but ... I need more bass separation (but not necessarily more bass volume). Can I do this without a sub, and if so, what would your recommendations be? If I will need a sub, what would your recommendations be, and would you still recommend the same speakers (if going with a sub, does one still need the same caliber of main speakers ... or can one maybe go back to bookshelf speakers)? I would say that my price range is probably $700-$1000 for the pair ... and $700-1300 if a sub is needed.

My listening patterns and tastes: wide variety of music ... little bit of jazz, little bit of show music, but I would say 80-90% classic rock, current rock, and current day stuff like Creed, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Counting Crows, Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, etc (no rap). I live in an 800 sq. ft. apartment.

Thanks for your help!

U may want to consider pairing a PSB Alpha bookshelf speakers(http://www.psbspeakers.com/s/newAlphaSeries.html) with a small Hsu sub (http://www.hsuresearch.com/) given that your apartment is quite small. This should be within your budget. Most floor standing speakers within your budget are unlikely to produce low bass (below 40 hz) so if U want bass U need to add a sub.

I will second that.

NAD will give you a better sound by far (for me). NAD c320bee (just 2 channels for music) amp is nice. Their surround receivers are good too. This place has good prices on refurb.

Although Athena doesn't have a transparent and lively tweeter, the sound is pretty and fun. Makes me want to turn it on again and again.

That's what a good system should sound like to me - makes one look forward to hearing again.

If they don't do it for you, check these out.
Axiom m3ti or m22ti (www.vertigoonline.com) search for "axiom"

Ascend acoustics

They both won awards from the pros. Read the reviews. Axiom reviews are here -(www.axiomaudio.com)

Mate them with the sony sub and a stand to get the best out of them.

i'm new to the home theater world, but trying to figure out how to win the lottery so that i can buy the bi-polar speakers i heard from definitive technology. solve all of your problems for only a little more than you mentioned. local store has the floor standing speakers for about $750 a piece (so 1500 for the pair instead of the 1300 you mentioned) and they have a powered 10" sub in each tower. i would suggest you atleast give them a listen if you have the chance. two ten inch subs might be more than you want in an apartment, but they make a lot of sense paired with the other speakers for optimal fusion of tones. they are pretty small compaired to many other tower speakers(check for the actual specks, definitivetech.com i think). just my two cents on what i'd buy if i had the money today.
