Placement of side firing subwoofers

I am considering purchasing a pair of speakers with active side firing subwoofers for home theatre and music. Unfortunately, while the room is relatively large, the speakers will need to be placed between the TV cabinet and about one foot from the side wall.

The question is this: how will such a speaker placement detract from the sound? And is there any link which has more on this subject?

Thanks for any help.
Cheers

Well for subwoofers they usually sound better in corners. I suggest that you put the subs in the back of the room behind your seating arrangement. I have seen many Home Theaters with there sub or subs in the front of the room where there Tvs are. This is a no no. Your going for dual subs huh. I have to ask this question why. For most things one usually works the best. Also it depends on what your A/V Reciver or amp/preamp has for subwoofer out. If you receiver has dual mono sub outs then you could do it. or you can use a Y rca adapter to connect the recevier to only one sub and it will come on faster. Active means that you have to plug the sub in. Passive on the other hand gets its power from the Receiver.

As for you question yes if the speaker placement is not setup right your bass may be off from the movie or music your listening to. Or if your speakers are not setup perfectly or near perfect you may hear the movie delayed or to fast depending on how your speakers are setup.

Tower speakers have been popular for years. The trend towards isolating the dual woofers section of a tower into a full fledged sub woofer was natural. Side fire types give the advantage of using a bigger driver in each tower. Dual channel (usually mono) is an excellent way to achieve bass nirvana without the hassle of a seperate big box sub. If the subs are crossed over properly, they shouldn't sound tubby or bloated. The only reason I would understand the use of a stand alone sub is to reach that lower extra octave (10Hz - 20Hz) in order to "shake your foundation"!!!

To Jason Alexander:

If you were to place the sub in the back of the room, you will have to run a long wire to connect it to the receiver.

Is this ok, given the distance the low frequency signal will have to travel (even though it will be boosted by the sub, later), but will it not introduce distortion.

Also, try to place the sub in the listening area and walk around the room finding the sweet spot and place the subwoofer there. I have not tried this but im sure it might work.
