Is it ok to buy a dvd player and use it for both dvds and music cds or is it better to buy a separate dvd player and a cd player?
Do CD players generally sound better for music over DVD players or is there a difference?

DVD players make excellent CD players, with no compromise because the D-A converters for DVD have to be way over the requirement for playing CD. There may be something else to consider at the ultra high end where CD player makers use high-spec D-to-A converters (DACs) anyway, and then go in for over-sampling, separate power supplies, and all that. But for most people a new DVD player will most likely knock the socks off you old CD player. I know mine did, and I was surprised.
