How does 4 conductor speaker wires work?

I purchased Monster speaker wires with 4 conductur individual wires inside (model S144RCL). Can someone explain to me how I'm suppose to use all four individual wires? The ones I had before had two individual wires, one red and one black, which lined up fine with my receiver's inputs. Are the additional two wires necessary? Have I purchased the wrong wires? I have a HK7200 receiver. Thx

You didn't buy the wrong type.

Just use 2 wires for black and red.
Combining will make the wires thicker and improve the sound.

If your speaker has 4 connections, than you can bi-wire it. This is done by connecting each wire to a connector on your speaker, and combining 2 wires in the receiver - the same color ones.

Don't ever mix the colors!

Thanks for the insight. If I use two wires per banana plug, i'll probably have to get new plugs then. I don't know how two wires will fit into the ones i have. Are these plugs even necessary? (i have Liberty plugs that cost be $3.99 per pair or about $8 for each speaker).

Thanks
