THE BASIC DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO IS PLACEMENT.

if you have a rear firing sub and need extra bass
you can place it in a corner.

if you have a front firing sub and don't need as much bass it can be faced more towards the middle
of the room.

either sub can be moved closer or farther from a wall
or corner to adjust the amount of bass. but one
or the other could work better for it's given application
and or room.

well steven if it makes no difference in your room
for placement.

then for music i prefer the natural sound of the
driver so i like front firing.

for movies it really doesn't matter, your just looking
for bloated explosions. but a rear firing sub in a
corner might help/enhance that.

When I said back firing subwoofer I meant bottom firing. A 12" KLH subwoofer is a bottom firing subwoofer. Couldn't someone just tilt a bottom firing subwoofer on it's back or side to make it front firing?

Stephen that's what i figured you meant.

sure you could turn the sub any way you want to
change the sound of it.

but subs and any speaker for that matter are designed
a certain way. if you change how the designer intended
it to be used you can't be sure how it's going to
perform.

a down firing sub is using the floor to help create it's sound.
if you tilt it away from the floor it will not perform
correctly.

My reckoning on this is that a downward firing sub will help to disperse the sound better than a forward firing one which some people with sensitive hearing can localise but then some say a properly setup sub cannot be located anyhow. Go figure!

matter of taste-i prefer a front firing sub-ive found the rear-or down firing a bit too tubby for me-i have the infinity il-250 watt sub(10 inch woofer)-and have owned others-settled on this one--and oh by the way--all subs are NOT created equal--my infinity cost me 400 bucks--10 inch--son in law got 10 inch velodyne 100 wpc-at same volume--same movie-same size room--the lower oomph on gladiator was missing--the chariot against the wall scene--in audio--more than anything else you DO get what you pay for
