Silver Member Username: HawkbillyNova Scotia Canada Post Number: 660 Registered: Jul-07 | Doug Smith is pretty amazing. The guy that always drops my jaw is Stanley Jordan. There's a video I saw on youtube of him playing Mozart when he was much younger......mind numbing. He can turn the guitar into a piano and play both hands. I've got a couple of his LP's, but you don't get a full sense of how amazing he is until you watch him. Just doesn't sound like 1 guitar when he plays. He does a pretty b!tch!n' Stairway to Heaven too. |

He played a gig here a bunch of years ago at Shank Hall- a tiny club with a cozy atmosphere....just Stanley played. Carried his own gear in thru the front door and set up. He played a version of El Condor Pasa that night that was absolutely beautiful. I'll never forget it. The guy is amazing with he can do with a guitar. |

Years ago they used to market outfits like that - and particularly 6" heels - as sleazy costumes sold for the dominatrix "per-verts". Even Fredrick's of Hollywood stayed away from that and you had you go into some funky establishments just to buy the magazines that advertised the stuff. Oh, wait, I think that's what they're still selling - now it's just mainstream. So where are the original, groundbreaking acts today? All this stuff sounds pretty much the same. . |

Gold Member Username: MagfanUSA Post Number: 1262 Registered: Oct-07 | For 99% of everybody, anything with tubes is equally 'exotic'. It could have been a ST-70 for all anyone could tell. If it were MY commercial, I'd have used one of the Carver tube amps. The one on 4 granite slabs with like 14 KT-88 output tubes per side. what was the model #? |

'Why would anyone want to deal with THOSE things?' anything with a 'tube' sticking out would qualify. So, in keeping with 'too much is never enough', I just floated the Carver, as the MOST impressive amp possible. |

Platinum Member Username: Jan_b_vigneDallas, TX Post Number: 15019 Registered: May-04 | . I think it's around 2:40 into the video where you need to pay attention to where the fields are originating. Though I think the point to be made here is there are fields of "stuff" bombarding us at every moment of the day in virtually any location in the modern world. If you're wearing a cell phone on your hip, it is beeping to locate a nearby cell tower whether you are actively using the device or not. If you're sitting around with a wireless laptop perched above your you-know-what's, you're constantly hitting them with microwave radiation. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/18/business/18novel.html Bye-Bye Batteries: Radio Waves as a Low-Power Source By ANNE EISENBERG Published: July 16, 2010 MATT REYNOLDS, an assistant professor in the electrical and computer engineering department at Duke University, wears other hats, too -- including that of co-founder of two companies. These days, his interest is in a real hat now in prototype: a hard hat with a tiny microprocessor and beeper that sound a warning when dangerous equipment is nearby on a construction site. Using only radio waves for its electrical power, the SmartHat has a beeper that alerts the wearer to dangerous construction equipment nearby. What's unusual, however, is that the hat's beeper and microprocessor work without batteries. They use so little power that they can harvest all they need from radio waves in the air. . |
Gold Member Username: ExerciseguyFort Hamilton, NY United States Post Number: 3250 Registered: Oct-04 | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thing_(listening_device) Thing (listening device) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Replica of the Great Seal which contained a Soviet bugging device, on display at the NSA's National Cryptologic Museum. The Thing, also known as the Great Seal bug, was one of the first covert listening devices (or "bugs") to use 'passive' techniques to transmit an audio signal. It is considered a predecessor of current RFID technology, because it was likewise passive, being energized and activated by electromagnetic waves from an outside source Operating principles The Thing designed by Léon Theremin was very simple by today's standards. It consisted of a tiny capacitive membrane connected to a small quarter-wavelength antenna; it had no power supply or active electronic components. The device, a passive cavity resonator, became active only when radio waves of the correct frequency were beamed to the device from an external transmitter. Sound waves caused the membrane to vibrate, which varied the capacitance "seen" by the antenna, which in turn modulated the radio waves that struck and were re-transmitted by "The Thing." A receiver demodulated the signal so the sound that the microphone picked up could be heard, in the same way that an ordinary radio 'decodes' modulated radio waves into sound. Theremin's design made the listening device very difficult to detect, because it was very small, had no power supply or active components, and did not radiate any signal unless it was actively being irradiated remotely. These same design features plus the overall simplicity of the device made it very reliable and gave a potentially unlimited operational life. |
