| Hello. I'm running a home cinema setup based on Arcam AVR200 (http://www.arcam.co.uk/diva/cinema/avr200.html) integrated receiver and Arcam DV89 Plus DVD player as the source. This is a setup that should perform beautifully in stereo and to some extent even does. ;) Still, my obvious bottleneck are the Yamaha speakers that come from my previous entry level setup I started off replacing this year. I'm looking to upgrade front speakers first and move up to matching center and surround speakers some time later, to distribute the investment. I do not believe in subwoofers when it comes to stereo and as I live in an apartment building, my neighbors wouldn't vote for a mighty sub while watching movies as well. Thus the fronts need to be bass-capable floorstanders. Due to the wife factor, the finish of the speakers plays a role as well. Gotta think cherry, not big and black. After some research and auditioning I've narrowed my front speaker shopping list down to three main contenders: * Dynaudio Audience 72 (http://www.dynaudiousa.com/products/audience/72/aud72.htm) * Mordaunt-Short 908 (http://www.mordaunt-short.co.uk/products/908.html) * Audes Credo Blues (http://audes.com/blues.shtml) So, my questions to anyone who has been there before: 1) The AVR200 is sweet-sounding, but not too powerful -- will it be capable to drive these speakers to their full potential? I was told that I should avoid speakers with sensitivity below 88dB/W, is it really that drastical and rules out the Dynaudios? 2) If you have had a chance to audition these speakers in stereo, side by side (my experince has been on different locations), how would you compare them? 3) What's your opinion on the side-firing subwoofer element on the Mordaunts and Audes'? Would the AVR200 be able to drive them? 4) If a nicely cooperating surround speaker setup from the same maker is my long-term goal, which of the manufacturers would then be your choice? 5) Last but not least, do you have a fourth recommendation that you believe is superior to those three listed? Thanks a lot for reading this far, hope you have some feedback. BR, sC |
CA | check out www.audioperfectionist.com about subwoofer opinions. I tend to agree with the author on subs. With an active sub, you can unload lots of strain from the amp so AVR200 shouldn't be a problem. Also stand mount speakers + sub have much higher WAF! :-) so try Dyn Audience 52 + REL sub. You'll be in heaven! CA |

Hawk | sCandaL: You haven't told us one of the most important factors--what is the size of your room? |
| hey Hawk, sorry, just forgot that... it is about 50 square meters (9x5 meters or 27 x 15 feet), almost rectangular but with some niches, , some carpeting in between a sofa and speakers/TV, large windows in wall behind the front speakers and open kitchen with a bar in the opposite end. not the dream studio recording room... hope this gives you some idea, sC |
