I've heard good things about Sony SS-B3000 speakers for what you pay for them. They are $69 at Vanns. You can find 5.1 receivers new for $80 to $100 on the low end. Then you can add surrounds and a sub later when you can afford it. The SS-B3000 should sound decent without a sub too. The other thing to do is look on Craigslist you can usually find a pretty good deal on slightly used equipment. |

For example here is a listing of cheaper 5.1 receivers. I don't really have one that I've heard great things about but if you do go the receiver + speakers I would suggest putting more money into the receiver then the speakers. The speakers are easier to upgrade later. http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/home-audio-receivers/p/73 You will connect the audio output from the TV or blu-ray/DVD player to the reciever which amplifies it enough to drive the speakers. The other option would be the active powered speakers, like the ones you listed. They have built in amps so you won't need to worry about a receiver. If you want to go this route I have a pair of Audioengine A2s that sound great. Though they don't have much bass so if you really like your bass you would want to add a subwoofer later. M-Audio also makes some nice ones. |
