OK then...

I recently have let go of the Epos, Wharfedale Evos, Creek, Kimber PK10 and am now selling my Apollo. I will be trimming it all down and either picking up a turntable or a Mastersound Due Venti integrated (maybe), if it can best my Sonneteer, which is not a given. At 20 watts per channel, around here, that would certainly be the path less traveled..lol!

Agree on all counts...

The Apollo served me very well over the time that I had it, and joins the ranks of my Rotel RCD971 and NAD C542 as my all time favorite sources....that is until the Saturn. Never did fall in love with my Audio Refinement CD Complete Alpha (who could love anything with that name).

Ask a lot more Nick. $500 and some change seems to be about what they're listed for on Audiogon.

Nuck - Is that Heineken mini keg half empty or half full?

I'm willing to bet completely empty, but that's just me.

That Heiny tub will hold a 5" driver one day. It just got left behind one weekend and it is colour ther than black or grey here.

I ain't all Goth or anything, but I like the look.

Thanks guys!

Next up is a funky deal for a DAC

Bryan, Thanks for the getting the spiked stands to me so safely! They have exceeded my expectations!

I do not know if anybody else with Gallo's would care to pay retail on these but in my set up they would be worth it. Fortunately Bryan was very fair with me in this transaction.

but now my Arro's upstairs have to survive on Arcam Avr 280. Bi Amped but... Thinking about McIntosh integrated (most likely MA6300 would be most I could afford) and YBA WDA202 DAC to go with squeeazebox. But not sure when. This basement drained me a bit.

Thanx Mike ...
I'd recommend replacing the original Gallo spikes with 5/16 - 18 x 1/2" hx hd bolts. I believe its either those or 1/4 - 20's on the Gallo spikes.
Might make for a cleaner install.
Glad they worked out for you.

Bryan, good advice on the bolts. I used the original Gallo spikes to bolt the outrigger spike bar to the speaker base as its width served as a washer for better contact. However I agree with you that using bolts with washers would be cleaner plus I could wrench it tighter.

Thanks.

Gallo's are staying black. LOL

What is a mongo plinth?

Pablo, Sweet look! I imagine it gives you the theater experience very nicely.

The MA-6300 would be a good option. Have you heard the Arros with any MAC gear? If you did and liked it there is little risk you would not feel the same or better with the MA-6300.

there is probably nothing wrong with Arcam Avr280 driving Arro's, especially bi amped but... there is always but...
When I will demo MA6300 I will have to hear significant difrence . I was quoted around $4600 for MA6300 and YBA DAC. So if I consider spending such a money it has to be a difrence. I think after the HT in the basement I have to wait a bit

I did! As dorky as this sounds I take pics of all my gear, lol.

The amp is the 502-BRC (don't ask me how their nomenclature works, it actually a 60 watt amp). It has fixed and variable RCA pre-outs and remote control (a must)! The CDP is the Jolida JD-100A tube 24-192 CDP... the thing weighs quite a bit - solid metal. The 502 came with 6550 output tubes, which to me, sound really good.

I sold my McIntosh MCD 301 for a price I was very, very happy with which financed both the new amp and CDP.

Just out of the gate, I find that the Jolida is smoother and more lush sounding than the Mac gear (obviously tube vs. ss). The Mac is definitely has a much lower noise floor but the Jolida sounds much more balanced across the 2 channels - better imaging I suppose? Keep in mind I only had the entry level McIntosh, which has a lot to do with it. But, for an amp that costs a 1/4 of what I paid for the McIntosh it sounds pretty darned good... .with the option of tube rolling.

I was gonna say...entry level Mac costs considerably more than the Jolida gear. Obviously the Jolida is a high value option that provides a bunch of musical satisfaction.

It doesn't carry the hefty warranty like a McIntosh or a Bryston, for that matter. Hopefully that isn't an issue. I really think this is a reasonable way to get into tubes. The easy-bias feature is a definite bonus too.

The Mastersound Due Venti that I'm looking to get into in the next year or so has a very nice auto bias feature. Easy to own and operate. Jolida used to have a terrible rep for reliability. I heard last year from a dealer that I trust that they have come a long way in the right direction. Good news, because the products have always sounded good.

Yes, no tone or balance controls on the Rogue either. I've never used them on the Parasound P3 so there's nothing to miss and, as you say David, a definite plus in maximizing sound quality.

Great pics Pablo and David.

Pablo - The 6300 should sound very good with your Arros. And David's in Canada too, making things easier I suppose.

David - Interesting jump. Now that you've got tubes on your mind, have you heard the Manley Stingray, Audio Research, or Conrad Johnson? Mac tubes?

I might as well spend someone's money, seeing as how there's not much of my own to spend.

lol Stu! I've seen a few Manleys for sale but didn't pull the trigger due to lack of knowledge. To me, the Jolida was a known entity and an inexpensive risk. The Mac tubes are beyond my realm of fiscal responsibility right now.

How about Mastersound or Unison Research. A couple Italian company's that do great all tube amps.

Bryan: Right now I'm using my Totem Sttafs with the Jolida, but I'm also gonna try my other speakers soon too.

Chris: I really wanted to stay with Mac for the long haul, but I really wanted to get into tubes, but the cost of going that route with Mac was something I couldn't afford right now.

Yup, both the amp and CDP are brand new. I bought them from a dealer in Winnipeg, so I didn't pay duties or PST.

David, something you probably already know but I'll mention anyway. If you can, turn on the amp for an hour or longer prior to listening. Mine sounds best after about 90 minutes of play time. My tubed cdp sounds pretty good after about 30 minutes.

It will take a bit for burn-in, so you haven't heard nearly the best of the amp or cdp yet. I really hope the Jolida gear does it for you. Definitely experiment with tubes, but wait until you get through burn-in first. I strongly recommend talking to Andy at Vintage Tube Services. It is very easy to get hosed on the NOS tube market, and that's one worry you won't have with Andy.

Playing catch up on emails going back a ways. Just recently did I become aware of David's venture.

Not the route that I would have taken but the gear certainly looks very nice and if it is giving you a sound that you can listen to at length then that is all that should matter.

If history is any indication I do not think you have much to worry about with the warranty period. LOL

Do you have enough wood to try it under the Saturn and / or Oppo?

Strangely enough, when I had the Saturn on a shelf with more height I experimented between the wood slabs and the foam rubber - no difference. I haven't tried the Saturn with the timber over the foam rubber as I haven't enough height. There will be, in not too distant future, a different rack and equipment layout which should prove far more beneficial to the contraints I have now - it will all go in front of the listening postion and set up as appropriately as possible. It will just have to wait a while I'm afraid. But, I'm still as happy as a pig in mud with the sound.

Hey Mike, can you read David's mind?
