Platinum Member Username: NuckPost Number: 14570 Registered: Dec-04 | The Wharfe 9.4 go for cost , 570 CDN. The Apollo sans remote is 350 cdn. Tube amp, Lings and various sundries to be listed yet. |
Platinum Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 12127 Registered: Feb-05 | OK then... I recently have let go of the Epos, Wharfedale Evos, Creek, Kimber PK10 and am now selling my Apollo. I will be trimming it all down and either picking up a turntable or a Mastersound Due Venti integrated (maybe), if it can best my Sonneteer, which is not a given. At 20 watts per channel, around here, that would certainly be the path less traveled..lol! |
Platinum Member Username: NuckPost Number: 14571 Registered: Dec-04 | so long as the gear goes to a music lover, it's all good Art. 20 good watts is a good 20 Watts! |
Platinum Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 12129 Registered: Feb-05 | Agree on all counts... The Apollo served me very well over the time that I had it, and joins the ranks of my Rotel RCD971 and NAD C542 as my all time favorite sources....that is until the Saturn. Never did fall in love with my Audio Refinement CD Complete Alpha (who could love anything with that name). |

Silver Member Username: EzntnGreeneville, TN Post Number: 166 Registered: Apr-09 | Thanx Mike ... I'd recommend replacing the original Gallo spikes with 5/16 - 18 x 1/2" hx hd bolts. Gold Member Username: Mike3Wylie, Tx USA Post Number: 2321 Registered: May-06 | Bryan, good advice on the bolts. I used the original Gallo spikes to bolt the outrigger spike bar to the speaker base as its width served as a washer for better contact. However I agree with you that using bolts with washers would be cleaner plus I could wrench it tighter. Thanks. Gallo's are staying black. LOL What is a mongo plinth? Thanks guys! |
Gold Member Username: Mike3Wylie, Tx USA Post Number: 2322 Registered: May-06 | Pablo, Sweet look! I imagine it gives you the theater experience very nicely. The MA-6300 would be a good option. Have you heard the Arros with any MAC gear? If you did and liked it there is little risk you would not feel the same or better with the MA-6300. |

Silver Member Username: PabloPost Number: 169 Registered: Mar-06 | so who has this MA6300 for sale? I was planning sometime to demo one from local dealer. like I mentioned this would be one option - MA6300 and a dac for squeezebox |
Silver Member Username: PabloPost Number: 170 Registered: Mar-06 | there is probably nothing wrong with Arcam Avr280 driving Arro's, especially bi amped but... there is always but... When I will demo MA6300 I will have to hear significant difrence . I was quoted around $4600 for MA6300 and YBA DAC. So if I consider spending such a money it has to be a difrence. I think after the HT in the basement I have to wait a bit Nuck what is this used mac going for? |

Gold Member Username: My_rantzGold CoastAustralia Post Number: 2988 Registered: Nov-05 | Ah, you had them all ready didn't you Dave Very nice indeed. If the sound is as good as it looks, you're set. I'm awaiting the arrival a tube pre amp, my first venture into tubes. I'm really looking forward to it. |
Platinum Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 12263 Registered: Feb-05 | Congrats, David. What is the amp and cd player, models and the like. |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3692 Registered: Feb-07 | I did! As dorky as this sounds I take pics of all my gear, lol. The amp is the 502-BRC (don't ask me how their nomenclature works, it actually a 60 watt amp). It has fixed and variable RCA pre-outs and remote control (a must)! The CDP is the Jolida JD-100A tube 24-192 CDP... the thing weighs quite a bit - solid metal. The 502 came with 6550 output tubes, which to me, sound really good. I sold my McIntosh MCD 301 for a price I was very, very happy with which financed both the new amp and CDP. |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzGold CoastAustralia Post Number: 2989 Registered: Nov-05 | You devil you. Congrats Dave. Really nice. Enjoy! |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3693 Registered: Feb-07 | Haha! Thanks M.R. I've had zero time to enjoy it this weekend. Maybe later this week. |
Platinum Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 12264 Registered: Feb-05 | Outstanding, David, you are taking a different path. I'll bet it sounds pretty damn good. Now pick up that Jolida phono stage and a rekkid playa and you'll be on the road to ruin. |
Platinum Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 12266 Registered: Feb-05 | I would love to hear a a comparison of the sound with the Macs. |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3695 Registered: Feb-07 | Just out of the gate, I find that the Jolida is smoother and more lush sounding than the Mac gear (obviously tube vs. ss). The Mac is definitely has a much lower noise floor but the Jolida sounds much more balanced across the 2 channels - better imaging I suppose? Keep in mind I only had the entry level McIntosh, which has a lot to do with it. But, for an amp that costs a 1/4 of what I paid for the McIntosh it sounds pretty darned good... .with the option of tube rolling. |
Platinum Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 12268 Registered: Feb-05 | I was gonna say...entry level Mac costs considerably more than the Jolida gear. Obviously the Jolida is a high value option that provides a bunch of musical satisfaction. |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3696 Registered: Feb-07 | It doesn't carry the hefty warranty like a McIntosh or a Bryston, for that matter. Hopefully that isn't an issue. I really think this is a reasonable way to get into tubes. The easy-bias feature is a definite bonus too. |
Platinum Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 12269 Registered: Feb-05 | The Mastersound Due Venti that I'm looking to get into in the next year or so has a very nice auto bias feature. Easy to own and operate. Jolida used to have a terrible rep for reliability. I heard last year from a dealer that I trust that they have come a long way in the right direction. Good news, because the products have always sounded good. |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3697 Registered: Feb-07 | I've heard they've stepped up QA quite a bit in the last couple of years, right down to the tubes that come included. |
Gold Member Username: Nickelbut10Post Number: 3004 Registered: Jun-07 | Those look fantastic David. Proof that great sound and/or better sound does not have to come with a bigger price tag. Congrats bud. |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3699 Registered: Feb-07 | Thanks Nick :-) |
Platinum Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 12272 Registered: Feb-05 | It looks really good in black. I didn't even know they produced black gear. |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3700 Registered: Feb-07 | The black is the latest iteration. Another new thing with the integrateds is that they dropped the tone and balance controls. A definite plus in my opinion. |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzGold CoastAustralia Post Number: 2990 Registered: Nov-05 | Yes, no tone or balance controls on the Rogue either. I've never used them on the Parasound P3 so there's nothing to miss and, as you say David, a definite plus in maximizing sound quality. |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3702 Registered: Feb-07 | For sure M.R. I would stay away from anything that had tone controls, and no bypass. |
Gold Member Username: Stu_pittIrvington, New York USA Post Number: 3706 Registered: May-05 | Great pics Pablo and David. Pablo - The 6300 should sound very good with your Arros. And David's in Canada too, making things easier I suppose. David - Interesting jump. Now that you've got tubes on your mind, have you heard the Manley Stingray, Audio Research, or Conrad Johnson? Mac tubes? I might as well spend someone's money, seeing as how there's not much of my own to spend. |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3703 Registered: Feb-07 | lol Stu! I've seen a few Manleys for sale but didn't pull the trigger due to lack of knowledge. To me, the Jolida was a known entity and an inexpensive risk. The Mac tubes are beyond my realm of fiscal responsibility right now. |
Platinum Member Username: ArtkAlbany, Oregon USA Post Number: 12275 Registered: Feb-05 | "Now that you've got tubes on your mind, have you heard the Manley Stingray, Audio Research, or Conrad Johnson? Mac tubes?" How about Mastersound or Unison Research. A couple Italian company's that do great all tube amps. http://www.mastersoundsas.it/NEW%20SITE/amplificatori_integrati.htm http://www.unisonresearch.com/valve/default.html |
Silver Member Username: EzntnGreeneville, TN Post Number: 167 Registered: Apr-09 | Sweet looking setups David, & you also Pablo. I find the tube sound much more refreshing than the SS of my Rotel. Its all personal preference, and great that you can sample and discern for yourself. What speakers are you using with the Jolida? Congrats .... |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzGold CoastAustralia Post Number: 2991 Registered: Nov-05 | Some nice gear there, Art. Unison have some nice woodworkers too! |
Silver Member Username: HawkbillyNova Scotia Canada Post Number: 840 Registered: Jul-07 | David, I thought you were settling in for the long haul with the Mac gear. What made you switch things up ? The Jolida is a nice amp. Is it brand new ? |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3704 Registered: Feb-07 | Bryan: Right now I'm using my Totem Sttafs with the Jolida, but I'm also gonna try my other speakers soon too. Chris: I really wanted to stay with Mac for the long haul, but I really wanted to get into tubes, but the cost of going that route with Mac was something I couldn't afford right now. Yup, both the amp and CDP are brand new. I bought them from a dealer in Winnipeg, so I didn't pay duties or PST. |
Platinum Member Username: NuckPost Number: 14669 Registered: Dec-04 | Well done, Dave. Very nice! Who is the Winnipeg dealer? I am heading there right now. The city, not the dealer, LOL! |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3705 Registered: Feb-07 | McCulloch-Engstrom Audio. I found him on CAM, talked on the phone for awhile with the owner Paul. He's a stand up guy. |
Silver Member Username: HawkbillyNova Scotia Canada Post Number: 842 Registered: Jul-07 | David, something you probably already know but I'll mention anyway. If you can, turn on the amp for an hour or longer prior to listening. Mine sounds best after about 90 minutes of play time. My tubed cdp sounds pretty good after about 30 minutes. It will take a bit for burn-in, so you haven't heard nearly the best of the amp or cdp yet. I really hope the Jolida gear does it for you. Definitely experiment with tubes, but wait until you get through burn-in first. I strongly recommend talking to Andy at Vintage Tube Services. It is very easy to get hosed on the NOS tube market, and that's one worry you won't have with Andy. |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3706 Registered: Feb-07 | I've found that too Chris - the sound definitely gets better the longer the gear is on. Thanks for the info about the tubes. It'll be awhile before I try different tubes, though. |
Gold Member Username: Mike3Wylie, Tx USA Post Number: 2330 Registered: May-06 | Playing catch up on emails going back a ways. Just recently did I become aware of David's venture. Not the route that I would have taken but the gear certainly looks very nice and if it is giving you a sound that you can listen to at length then that is all that should matter. If history is any indication I do not think you have much to worry about with the warranty period. LOL |
Gold Member Username: DmitchellOttawa, Ontario Canada Post Number: 3719 Registered: Feb-07 | lol... for sure Mike. I tend to sell my gear long before any warranty would expire. Tried out the Studio 20's on the tube rig. They were..... meh.... back to the Sttafs! |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzGold CoastAustralia Post Number: 3022 Registered: Nov-05 | Pics of the Rogue Magnum Ninety Nine preamp in the rack. The Saturn and Oppo sit on slabs of foam rubber flooring tile. The mono blocs and preamp are on timber slabs over the foam rubber. |

Gold Member Username: Mike3Wylie, Tx USA Post Number: 2331 Registered: May-06 | I second David's post. I would think the sound would be better with the wood in place. Do you have enough wood to try it under the Saturn and / or Oppo? |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzGold CoastAustralia Post Number: 3023 Registered: Nov-05 | Strangely enough, when I had the Saturn on a shelf with more height I experimented between the wood slabs and the foam rubber - no difference. I haven't tried the Saturn with the timber over the foam rubber as I haven't enough height. There will be, in not too distant future, a different rack and equipment layout which should prove far more beneficial to the contraints I have now - it will all go in front of the listening postion and set up as appropriately as possible. It will just have to wait a while I'm afraid. But, I'm still as happy as a pig in mud with the sound. Hey Mike, can you read David's mind? |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzGold CoastAustralia Post Number: 3024 Registered: Nov-05 | Oh, under the feet of the Saturn and Oppo are steel ball bearings which do help. |
