I want to add home theater sound to my setup. I mostly listen to music. I listen to a very wide range of music. I have an old pair of B&W bookshelf speakers that are shot. I have a 5 year old Technics receiver with 120W X 4 + subwoofer output.
My room is 10 X 14 with the bookshelf speakers located against the front wall. The TV is in the corner. We sit against the back wall. The floors are hardwood.
I love that flat, detailed British sound for music. I tend to play it loud, 100 dB. But, my ears are not what they were when I was young. I definately need new speakers. I am game for changing any or all the components. I want to limit the cost to $3K.
I am thinking about adding small (10" X 10" X 36" max) LF and RF floor standing speakers next to the TV. I want to add a subwoofer for playing movies. Is a center channel needed? I can add RR and LR surround speakers but there is no room behind the seats for surround speakers. The surround speakers will be adjacent to the seats unless I install wall mount speakers behind the seats. I will have to run wires for the LR & RR speakers through the walls and attic (time consuming but not impossible).
Any thoughts??? Thanks in advance.

Placeing surrounds adjacent to you seats is fine.(I think that bipole surronds are used in this case. Could be wrong.) A center that is voice matched to your fronts is preferable to keep the sound smooth as it go left to right. As far as speakers go do your self a favor and listen for your self. Bring a copy of your favorit music with, and listen to as many different brands as you can. Many retailers will even let you demo this stuff at home where it matters most.
i couldn't really have said it much better than dave.
just a couple things to add.and i'm just going to shoot out what i would do if i was in your situation. and let you decide/mull over what i have said. i'm not saying this is the for sure way to do it. but givin your room and what you have this is my 2 cents.
yes i would buy "larger" rf and lf speakers and get the center channel from the same line.
now i am going to recomend getting a new universal dvd player that plays dvd-audio and sacd these are new high resoution music formats that play upto 5.1 channels."my choice denon 2200" $500
so nturally i am going to recomend a 5.1 reciever my choices would be marantz/harmon kardon/nad/ pioneer elite. their are others but i like these for a good start. somewhere around the $700 range give or take for descent quality.
surrounds aren't quite as important as the mains but 5.1 music sends a full signal to the rear channels so i would get full range speakers " 6.5 inch 2 ways or better" all 4 meaning fronts and rears the same even better.but you could use some larger towers up front with some 2 ways on the surrounds.don't have to match the fronts but if they did even better.
and a descent subwoofer. $500
everything i mentioned pricewise comes out to $1700
my guess would be about $1700 for 5 descent speakers that would put you in the $3400 range.
i don't have speaker recomendations for you.that one you need to go listen and find what you like.
2 substitutions that wouldn't hurt your performance too bad would be the pioneer 563a universal dvd player "$150" and a less expensive sub "$200"
that should get you a nice sounding system for both movies and music.
i have both dvd players they are in my oppinion the best bang for the buck in their respective categories.
this should give you a mid level well balanced system.
and i would not spend an arm and a leg on cables for this system.i use acoustic research from best buy. and you will need 6 cables from the dvd player to the reciever for sacd and dvd-audio.
