I'm not selling mine and I haven't even heard them yet!

Mordecai, Mike @ STO said he only had two pairs left in maple when I ordered mine on 6/4, and the other finishes are $90 more, so I'd hop to it if I were you.

I think KEF has an "Dark Apple" finish that is very similar to that Cherry; it's more red than orange.

Dark Walnut seems to have replaced Maple in several line ups; the Diamond 9 & 10 are available in Walnut.

The best finishes, IMHO, were those crazy exotics AV123 were using out of their Columbia factory; I have NO idea if they're even producing stuff down there anymore.

HTD also had some crazy finishes several years ago. I never see anything about them anymore?

Chris, did you get the cherry's for the same price as the maple? I will try to bargain with STO. If they are not moving much inventory they might be willing to. I mean it would be my third pair of Wharfies from STO.

Neither the cherry or maple look bad. I just like the contrast of the black cabinet, black driver manifolds, and black drivers.

I really think the 10's are what I'm looking for in low end. I don't think I want to mess with a sub. I just have to decide if I want to wait for a used pair in black to show up on Audiogon. Maybe I should post up a looking to buy add. Someone out their might want to move up or need to sell them.

Has any of you had a pair of he RC10's? Vann's has them on sale for $299 with free shipping. I would guess that they have no more bass then the 8's.

That picture of the Cherry is a photocopy, they are not that orangish looking they actually look very good,I had the Cherry, but i wanted the maple, but he said it would be about a week longer because he had to go to warehouse and get them, that Maple looks very nice

Chris Your gonna like the pics i post of the Encore SLS,the Moho natural satin looks better than my X-statics in the same finish.

Why all the hate on black?

I like the maple okay but I've never been a big fan of furniture colored speakers. I had a pair walnut colored Yamaha's once but black is my preferred color. So, I guess I am the only black fan. Haters...

So, did Chris get the same deal on Cherry that STO is offering on the Maple? Was he just pulling my chain?

I've quickly realized that is a problem with my piano black Quads, any little bit of dust or fingerprint on them and it really sticks out. Not only that, but scratches in the laquer finish will show.

I'm going to need to set something up so that anyone who gets within a foot of them will get an electric shock!

Mordecai,

I do not think Chris ever indicated that he got Cherry. I believe he was just putting that finish out there for others' consideration.

If you ever want to check out the bass on your 8's just PM me. You can swap them into my kit and give them a listen if you like.

I prefer that Cherry finish, but an extra $90 on a pair of speakers that cost $300 was a bit too rich for my taste, so I stuck with the Maple. Those pics of the Maple are growing on me though.

Art - can you use the jumpers with bi wired speakers?

Would these jumpers benefit HT speakers?

The Chord distributor in Dallas will sell me cables and interconnects since there isn't a retailer here. Carnival Silver two lead is $3.50 a foot and the 4 lead is $7.00. I also priced some interconnects that match up nicely with the speaker cables. The Cobra $115 and the Crimson for $85. Not to pricey but not cheap either. I would like to find some used so maybe I will look for a while before dropping a couple of hundred.

The jumpers are to replace the brass jumpers that come on bi-wirable speakers like your Evo's. Early in this thread is a picture of the jumpers. Go back to page one, I think, and you'll see what they look like. They are far better than the brass jumpers and in some cases better than using a length of the speaker cable you're using.

Okay, that is what I thought. I read something about jumpers and biwiring somewhere. I am using wire jumper for my HT speakers. Do you think anti-cables are worth buying for my HT speakers?

Any suggestions on where to set the crossover on the sub for the 8's?

I wouldn't buy 'em for the HT speakers...

You'll want to experiment with the crossover...I'd start at about 70hz and go up or down based on what you hear. First make sure the volume on the sub is loud enough to hear any adjustment you make and once you get the crossover right adjust the volume down. You really shouldn't be aware that the sub is there except that your system reaches a lower frequency than before. Felt but not heard.

An interesting thing you evo owners may want to know about evo2 quality..
Over a year back when I asked my dealer what he thought of the evos, as I was at the time considering buying some, he remarked how he thought their built quality was poor.
He had recently serviced one and was appauled at the oily mess that went everywhere.
He approved highly of the diamond 8 and 9 sound, but found the evo2s were poor on the midrange, enphasing the bass and treble. Perhaps that was just the equipement he used though!

I own both Diamond and Evo 2...no contest for sound or build quality...seems he must have listened with his head up his a s s. To add, if a dealer really said that his credibility would be shot immediately and I'd wonder what his motivation was. The Evo's sound light years better than the Diamond's and are built far better as well.

Other than that tweeter thing, I'd say they're fine build-quality wise. Fit and finish is very nice and clean (other than the grills which are cheap and look awful) and I've had mine open and it was very nicely built. All the joints were clean, wire routing was fine, there was a fair amount of bracing, and the bass driver uses threaded inserts rather than screwing right into the MDF. The only thing I haven't been a fan of is the binding posts as I use bare wire, so they can be a little annoying. Other than that they seem pretty well built inside and out.

I am enjoying the sub I must admit. Although I think a 12 inch is a bit big for my room. I think I will try to pick up an 8 or 10 so I can put this one back in my HT setup.

So now that I've had some time with these speakers and listened to many different albums I'll post some more impressions.

Since getting them, the bass has come out quite a bit. It seems much deeper than before, and while still not as punchy as my other speakers, I can still feel it and it seems much more balanced with the rest of the music. I'm actually finding I'm not missing the extra punch with my old speakers as I'm realizing it was more of a distraction than anything. These have really taught me to appreciate what bass should be like I think.

With the bass came the mids, which seem very smooth but dynamic to me. Guitars sound a little polite, but I think that's an amp issue. Drums, organs, and vocals however sound excellent. I'm listening to The Tragically Hip's Phantom Power right now and Gordan's voice which is VERY dynamic sounds very realistic to me, and listening to the way the snare drum's sound decays just sounds great.

Highs I've said all along have impressed me very much with the amount of detail and resolution. I do think there is a bit of politeness when it comes to cymbals but again, I'd bet a new amp would take care of that. I really do like this tweeter though, it has all the detail I could want without sounding harsh like a metal based tweeter. It also sounds very good off axis to me....I frequently listen when falling asleep or sitting at my computer which is to the right of my system and while it's not the same as my primary listening position in that I lose proper imaging and such, it's still very impressive.

I've also pushed them pretty hard and even with my cheap Onkyo AVR they have never sounded distorted or hurt my ears or anything. Not sure if it's just that the speaker is easy to drive or what but they have never sounded bad even with my extremely underwhelming amplification. I still plan to upgrade my amplifier, probably this winter (although the NAD and Cambridge Audio deals at Spearit Sound are very tempting). But either way, these speakers have never sounded bad at all with any album I've thrown at them. My M80s had some trouble with some albums but excelled greatly with others.....I still think they do better with the albums they were good at but the Evos are much more well rounded in that they do everything. I think the biggest thing I've gotten from this speaker is the learning experience. While I haven't heard as many speakers as you guys I'm sure, I'm definitely learning what I like. I've found to disregard what sounds "impressive" (in a "look at me!" way) such as the punchy bass or over the top highs and just listen for the music. I remember auditioning the Paradigm Monitor V5s a couple years ago and being very impressed with the bass.....Looking back on that I do not think I would have been happy in the long run had I bought those speakers. What I like best about the Evos is that no aspect of them calls on itself, which I think gives it the balance that I'm only starting to appreciate.

I have some ideas for my upgrade path.....Stands as I mentioned in my other thread ( https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-audio/579584.html, should be starting those soon), the room treatments as Jan has suggested (and perhaps a new room, which I was supposed to get a while ago but has yet to happen), as well as the integrated amp. I think I will be living with these speakers for quite a while though, these are the closest I've come so far to what's "right" to me and I doubt I'll find anything else in my price class that will come close. Overall I am very pleased with these speakers.

Thank you very much for adding your impressions to this thread Freddie and well done. Now if Chris could keep his out of the box long enough to break 'em in. BTW Freddie I agree with much of what you said and that's why my pair is going nowhere...not for a long time.

I've had the 10s for a while now, I think I got them right after Art did, but they've been in the box until now, and they are Maple.

Duh! I just saw your pictures. I still want the 10's but I'm holding out for some reason. The acoustic foam improved the low end in my listening room. But I would like to have the bigger driver.

Well Mordecai, did ya get it done?

I'm getting incredible sound from mine in the home office. Very nice articulate bass and a very open character without being fatigueing. Midbass and midrange is very clean and open in an Epos sort of way without the extra energy that Epos brings to that fequency range. They are all that I hoped they would be...and that's very good indeed.

Got a few questions for you all. I believe the Evo2-10 has the exact same drivers that are in the Quad 12L2. Assuming that is correct, should I expect the same kind of sound from the Wharfedale that I'd get from the Quad? Or are there simply too many other factors at play (like cabinet design, which is obviously different with the Evo's being curved and the 12L2 not).

I was comparing their bass extension and the Quad's seem to go deeper, 45Hz vs. 57Hz. But the Quads are +/- 6dB, while the Wharfedales are +/- 3dB, which may account for those numbers.

How detailed are the Evo's? Average, above average, or below average?

Thanks!

Art, I ordered a pair today. Can't wait to get them. I probably won't get them until next Monday though.
