Interesting Dave, I can relate to the article. Dontcha just love it when you get a new cd, the volume is set to your usual position, you hit start and get blown through the roof lol!

Okay, I guess I'm not right up there on forum speak, what's RATM - I've tried but don't see it :-)

RATM isn't forum speak, it's the band Rage Against The Machine.

Great link David. The RATM self titled album is one of my favorites, along with Tool's Aenima which also made the list.

Those guys hit the nail on the head with the stuff I know. I use Tool's Aenima as a demo at times for its dynamics and micro details. But the reviewer is absolutely right when he says it gets harsh, especially when you push the volume.

I just wish someone would declare a winner to the loudness war and be done with it. I nominate Metallica. Death Magnetic on CD sounds horrible due to compression. On Guitar Hero it sounds phenominal. Different mixers - one who clipped it, and one who knows the value of dynamics.

LOL. RATM= Rage Against The Machine. Their
I've felt that M.R.

RATM - first album came out in 92 (I think). At the time a very original mix of metal, electronic and hip-hop, with very good production that wasn't overproduced but just very GOOD.

Anything by Rage Against the Machine should be on there. One of my all time favorite bands. Evil Empire was just as loud.lol. Bulls on Parade baby!!

Tool-10000 days should be on there I agree. Although its not nearly as good as Aenima IMO, it is louder in every aspect. Every Tool album got a dose of better production as they got bigger.

Louder and better production?
I find 10,000 days to be nearly unlistenable in quality of production and sound.
That album probably blew up more tweeters than any recording in history, and sandbagged some Sony receivers, as well.

Nick, have you heard any news on the RATM reunion?

I have to revisit my CD collection and re-listen to some of the albums on the list.

Funny thing is there's no synthesizer or anything like that used. Those odd sounds are Tom Morello's guitar!

RATM has had a few small "re-unions" if I'm not mistaken. They get together and play a few shows every few years. People get all excited and think they're starting up again, then realize that Zach De la Rocha has more important things to do with his time, like protest some military take-over of a country that no one knows. I guess that is more important, but I'd like some new music too.

Then again, I didn't care much for The Battle of LA. There were a couple of pretty good songs, but overall I thought it wasn't very good.

Morello is under-appreciated.

I think Morello was one of the best parts of the band. To make all those crazy sounds with just the guitar and old-school effects pedals (no digital processor) is pretty wild. At the time as well, very few bands were doing the metal/rap fusion thing.

I agree. Morello is one of the most talented guitar players of my generation.

Zach de la Rocha needs to pull his head out of his a s s and start making music with the boys again.

I agree Stu that Battle of LA was the worse album they had. That cover album they brought out a few hours after that though was awesome. The one with Ghost of Tom Jones and Renegades Of Funk on it. Such a good album. They did covers of Bob Dylan and everything.

While not strictly a volume/compression post, I hate Hits cd's that have not even been levelled for max volume.
One track whispers, the next shouts.

I have a Queen 2cd set, and I like it much better with a remote, LOL!
