Outstanding Art!! Audio setup's look so clean and beautiful. I like the two system integration in the one room. Brilliant. How many office systems can say they have Creek/Rotel/Paradigm/Epos in it?lol Awesome.

The new V6 Paradigms are so neutral and smooth. They do the whole sound stage so well for such a small speaker as well.

Yeah the little Atom Monitors are a remarkable bargain. The ELS 3's have a bit more midrange magic and image better but the the Atom's are a bit more neutral.

The Atom v6s look ever so slightly different than the v5s (which I have). I wonder what (if any) difference in sound there is?

Very nice systems, Art. I came very close to buying the Epos a little while back.

I sent him an e-mail asking about them. I hope he responds. Those are some great looking speaker stands.

And one of the features I really like, they have a resonably large platform plate for the speaker to sit on.

I can't stand these speaker stands that have a 4 inch or 5 inch rectangular or square plate. Way too small.

I bought some really nice Sanus stands at Futureshop (of all places), but I find that at 30" tall they're too high for my listening room.

The D5, according to the ERA site are a little over 10 inches long and 7" wide.

The platform plate, in Patrick's picture appears to cover almost the whole bottom of the speaker.

So I'm guessing that plate is about 8 to 9 inches deep and 6 to 7 inches wide.

That would be fine. Certainly better than 4-5 inches.

Actually 30 inches would be fine for my set up. But I would prefer 26" to 28 ".

I noticed something odd about these speaker stands.

The shorter speaker stands (16"-26" ) have larger platform plates. But as the stands get taller...into the 28"-30" range; they shorten the plates.

What the hell is that all about?

You would think that the taller the speaker stand, the larger the plate.

I mean, there's a greater risk from a tall drop, than a short drop. I don't get it.

The only thing I can figure is, that they think the taller stands are going to be used for small rear speakers...or something like that.

What you guys are looking for is the Skylan speaker stand. They resemble the Target HR 2 post stand, but Skylan cutom makes the top plate to exactly match your speaker size.

They are also reasonably priced for a custom pair of speaker stands.

Check his site out. He is a great guy to deal with. I have spoken to him on several occasions about different stands.

Before I call Canada. Could you tell me what these stands are made of?

The mass-loading uprigth post, is that some kind of wood/MDF or steel?

What about the platform plates? Wood or steel?

"The shorter speaker stands (16"-26" ) have larger platform plates. But as the stands get taller...into the 28"-30" range; they shorten the plates."

Generally speaking, bigger speakers are taller and therefore require shorter stands. Hence bigger plates on shorter stands. Smaller speakers are shorter and therefore require taller stands, hence smaller plates.

NMYTree,

This is taken directly froom the ite

"SYLAN speaker stands are MASS-LOADING.

Strong, yet light, they are engineered with MDF and Polymer Extrusion."

I'm not sure about the polymer, but I stongly suggest a phone call. They are great people to deal with.

Sony S550. It was on sale for C$300 after Christmas. Although the S350 was an astounding C$200, the S550 has 7.1 analog outputs which lets me try out the lossless sound on my non-HDMI h/k receiver. Had to unplug the SACD player though.

Thats the same one I have. It's an awesome player - so far it's played every single disc I've thrown at it (knocking on wood here). The only problem I've had with it so far is the remote kicked the bucket after about 2 months. The analog outs are a definite bonus.

Have you updated the firmware? I haven't bothered yet.

I am having a problem with it. It doesn't recognize the 1 GB USB card that came with it. I'll try reformatting it but I don't hold out much hope. If I'm lucky the store will do a straight swap for another player if I can't get it to work, without going through Sony.

So far I've only player one Blue Ray title, but the upscaling on regular DVDs is incredible! I had no idea DVDs could look so good.

That's right. Two feet inset into the wall. The "box" on the other side is in a closet so doesn't impact on another room.

There are also 3 Heresy II surrounds, one of which is also inset into a wall, as is the system rack. I can access the wiring behind the gear in the adjacent utility room.

With the efficiency of those speakers you'll be able to real theatre volumes.

What's the engine i.e. what's your amplification, source and projection?

The floor, which doesn't show very well in this shot, is cork tiling. It's half-an-inch thick and installs directly over a concrete floor with only a vapour barrier and foam liner. It's very comfortable to walk on, even barefoot, has a little spring to it, and plays nice with sound.

Theatre volumes are easy. I reach "reference" at -15 dB (as I recall) on the volume dial, and typically watch a movie 7 to 10 dB below that.

Sources are plain jane. h/k avr-325 receiver and 25-year-old 120W Nikko power amp used for surrounds. Rotel RCD-02 CD player, Sony S550 Blue Ray, Bell ExpressVu HD PVR. Screen is 720p 50-inch Samsung; at 10-feet viewing (the sweet spot of the horns on the 20-foot wall), 720p is perfect.

A friend has an almost new Monster MPA 2250 amplifier for sale at a good price.

http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=1902

Should I buy it?

I'll add a 1080p projector and screen in due time.

I don't care for Monster's ethics and marketing practices, but in this case I wouldn't be putting money in their bank account but in my friend's bank account. :-)

The amp is overkill for sure, but another amp or two (which I keep forever) and the next receiver is either a pre-pro or a low-amplification (first h/k in the lineup) to be used on some surround channels.

It's been more work than I anticipated. Much more. But I am finishing most of the basement, so I am working on two other rooms as well and that adds up. But it's coming together nicely and I'm very happy with the result so far. It's a clean layout with interesting geometry.

I'm wondering about the suspended ceiling. It would be best to avoid the plain white tiles. I bought a box of flat paintable tiles and will try to paint one to see what I get out of that.

Thanks Art. The sub is a Hsu, but it plays nice.

I know you most of you guys prefer a separate two-channel rig, but I'm also very happy with the stereo sound I get. I also have a Phillips 963SA (SACD player and oversampling CD player) which is nice to me, but it is not hooked up right now because the Blue Ray player is now taking up the 8-channel analog input on the receiver. I don't think that Klipschorns are a difficult impedence load, so my hk avr-325 sounds good on it. as I recall, it was members on this forum that recommended it to it nearly 5 years ago.

Peter- Sick room man. Very nice speakers. I use a Monster power center in my theater downstairs and it works great. Buying the Monster stuff used isn't bad, it is when you pay the full retail for the stuff you are getting railed.

FWIW the Sony Blu-Ray firmware is great. Update it. A new one just came out mid November. Just download the file onto your computer, extract it and then burn it as an IMAGE(Nero will do the trick) onto a DVD. Put the DVD into the player and let it do its thing. It will tell you when its done and kick it out.

I don't see one yet for the 550 however.

Looking at the collection there's some jazz, but mostly newer Rock (The Dears, TV on the Radio, etc) and Folk/Americana (Iron and Wine, Shins, Death Cab for Cutie, etc).

I have a large collection of Jazz and Classical on CD, and am reluctant to buy the same performance again just to have it in vinyl. I'll move all this to a computer soon and get a good dac.

George, the system you see is in the rec-room - it's my son's gaming system (how many six year olds do you know who have a 51" gaming system?, lol). The speakers are just cheapo Sony bookshelves and a Fluance center channel.

I dunno Dave but I sure would love a Pop like you.

My Dad was good to us...we had the first 26" colour TV on our street in the 70's, a 54" T.V. in the late 80's and in the 2000 my Dad bought a 60". We were a TV family.

Dave / Nick, it was one of the early rear projection sets from the late 80's. It did weigh probably around 350lbs, at least. The box alone stood 5.5ft high and 3 ft deep and was 1 inch MDF. I was the envy of all my friends in high-school. I remember those days of watching Top Gun on that set.

If you can believe it I still have a portion of it. When the CRT's died my Dad hacked it and turned it into a low cabinet. The speakers are still in it. They were 8 inch full rangers.

lol nice George. I had a 27 inch 300 pound RCA with the turn dial and push power button from the 70's until I was 18 (9 years ago) lol. Then I went to college and got a good job. I wont be owning anymore of those tv's.lol. I just measured my wall last night, looks like a 106 inch screen will fit nicely. :-)

That's the measurement that counts. Take that with you when you go shopping for the new projector.
