I'm going to buy all their albums from the early to mid '70s. "The Magician's Birthday" is an awesome album. Epic, gothic, prog rock. Diggin' it. |

Gold Member Username: Mike3Wylie, Tx USA Post Number: 1976 Registered: May-06 | Listened to the first two Boston LPs earlier today. That almost seemed redundant. Tried the same with Journey but was not in that mood earlier. All above on vinyl. Switched to CDs. Settled in with; Elvis Presley's Essential Elvis Volume 6 - Such a Night M - 4.6 S - 4.0 This is an intimate insight to his interaction with the band members and studio production lead. It is a fun listen and an absolutely wonderful recording. This is one of my key reference discs. Joe Williams - Having the Blues Under European SKy CD - Mono I had an LP of one of his performances in 1963 at a Newport Festival which I found very earthy. This CD is manufactered by Denon / Nippon Columbia, Japan. It has the likes of Zoot Sims, Ellis Larkins, and the last half plus of the performances were with Count Basie and his Orchestra. It was recorded in Europe in the early 70's. I actually appreciate the fact that it is not in Stereo. I get the sense of some very good musicians with a familiarity with one another, especially with the Basie songs. M - 4.75 S - N/A |

I really do kind of like the slightly left of center jazz from ecm. -------------------------------------------------------------------- What I'm listening to... (I'm not ranking the sound or music. I'm only posting about albums I really love) Tape - Luminarium - Could probably be filed under post rock for a lazy generalization. It really goes so much deeper though. Jazz elements, piano, tape manipulations, "sounds", etc. Instrumental Swedish band. I think I found this when i was looking for some ambient drone type music ala Grouper - Dragging a Dead Deer up a Hill (acoustic drone basically). Ry Cooder - Paradise and Lunch - I had no idea this guy was on Beefheart's Safe as Milk (amazing album too). I am not big on country music, but I enjoy certain country ideas. His guitar tone is unbelievable. Carnifex - The Diseased and the Poisoned - Basically only if you like some nice heavy metal with solid breakdowns. Likely not many folks cup of tea here, but I love it. It's gutteral screaming, indecipherable lyrics, chugging riffs, and gigantic breakdowns. Grails - Doomsdayer's Holiday - "The Grails have embraced open-ended, free grooving, psychedelic rock, open-toned Eastern modalism, assault-worthy hard rock, spooky dub, and even folk music in this heady, stoned out brew." - Allmusic review sums it up pretty well. It's a trip lol. All of their albums are near perfect. Extremely consistent. Grinderman - Grinderman - Nick Cave ventures back to his punk/garage rock days of Birthday Party. Cave has his talking/singing thing going, but it is extremely hard edged and noisy for Cave. The Tragically Hip - In Violet Light - saw them twice in the last 2 months. Had to revisit some gems from the live show (Dire Wolf and Dark Canuck). If you're Canadian you're probably/hopefully already a fan (hopefully there are folks outside Canada too ). |

Silver Member Username: KbearCanada Post Number: 120 Registered: Dec-06 | The old Heep albums are good to buy now because they were recently re-released ('04 and '05) with bonus tracks in remastered form. Sound quality was not an afterthought either (at least this is the claim). I'm assuming they didn't press a lot of copies, so they may run out of new stock eventually. I just bought the following from CD Universe: Very Eavy, Very Umble Salisbury Look at Yourself Live Sweet Freedom Return to Fantasy High and Mighty Wonderworld Salisbury (180g vinyl) Already had their two big albums. Also got Reinventing Axl Rose by Against Me! and Come Away With Me by Norah Jones (SACD, even though I know it's not a great SACD). Bit of a shopping spree! Buying new music can get pretty expensive. That'll be the last I buy for a good long while. |
Gold Member Username: My_rantzAustralia Post Number: 2217 Registered: Nov-05 | Some of this weekend's music: Legends - DTS Master Audio, BluRay. This is a 'Live at Montreux' show with Eric Clapton, Steve Gadd, Marcus Miller, Joe Sample and David Sanborn. All legends for sure playing jazz/bues, funk, and blues. Miller's bass work was exceptional as were the others doing what they do best. M - 4.5 S - 4.8 V - 4.7 Bluju - Frank (Paris Slim) Goldwasser. Some very good blues on this cd. Sometimes buying an unknown (to me) can be disappointing. Not this time. Many guests including Philip Walker. Does some nice work on his Gibson. M - 4.40 S - 4. 50 Bluelisted - JW Jones Some interesting guitar from Jones and Little Charlie Baty (Little Charly and the Nightcats). This is lively blues and rock and roll. Girls put on your bobby-x and expect to go flying! M - 4.00 S - 4.60 One Kind of Favour - BB King The King of the blues always sounds great and here, well into his eighties, does it again, though I would have preferred he broke the playlist up a bit with some vocal help from Mr Rebenack who was on keyboards for all tracks. Over the past few years, I think BB has a formula for his playlists where the music sounds similar and the lyric are new. But he's still king. M - 4.30 S - 4.75 Midnight Blues - Magic Slim Wrong title - not a midnight album at all. Well, not for me anymore at least. Slim tears the blues up again on this cd. All good. M - 4.3 S - 4.3 So in Love - Roberta Gambarini After her last jazz cd, of which I found I liked less and less after many listens, I thought this would be better judging from the playlist. It is imo, but as much as I like her voice, there's something there which I also find a little distracting. Nice album and good band. And why oh why, do so many birds feel they have to finish their set with 'Over the goddamn bl00dy Rainbow' - grrrr! M - 4.5 S - 4.5 |

Joe Williams: nothin' but the blues with Red Holloway & His Blues All-Stars - CD I do not know what to say about this recording that would capture anyone's attention or imagination but if you are either a Joe Williams fan or a Blues aficionado this is a must listen. The fluidness of this reminds me of a group of musicians that either spent time together or have a common understanding of the lack of boundaries of what makes up Blues. M - 4.5 S - 4.0 Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown CD This is a Nick K. / David M. type of blast. I found this to be better than American Idiots. Once they got to Act II I was completely captivated. This is not a departure from Green Day's sound but is so much more melodic than anything I have heard from them. Even if they are not your cup of tea this is worth a listen. Too bad they don't rent CD's like they do DVD's. M - 4.5 S - 4.25 |
