Most everyone agrees that most companys advertise bogus wattage numbers, e.g., an advertised 120W X 5,6, or 7 may actually yield 50W per channel and don't even think you'll see that power in all channels when the volume cranks up, well not without alot of distortion anyway. Who makes receivers or amps that even come close to their advertised wattage power?? |

New member Username: RodNY Post Number: 2 Registered: Jun-04 | With surround sound home theater amps its pretty safe to assume that if the amp is rated at 600 watts and is a 6.1 channel amp then it will be 100 watts per channel not including the sub output. So as far as that goes its just doing the math that the total output divided between all the available channels. Most respectable manufacturers will come pretty close to what the advertise. On the other hand if you're talking about total output power vs. RMS (average output) then thats a little different. An easy way to describe it is with a comparison between a high school track runner and an olimpic track runner. Both runners in a quater mile race may both be able to reach an equal top speed, but the olimpic track runner will be able to keep that speed up without strain for the entire race (Average power output). Where as the high school track runner may only be able to keep it up for a short period and with great effort (Total power output). So pretty much they are telling you the truth about the total power handling of the amp. What they are not telling you is that its gunna sound like crap at higher volumes. |
