Does size matter?

I'm a fan of the bigger subs, ie 15's and 18's.

I've heard though that 10's are the all around good sub, because they have rumble, and punch which most larger subs tend to lack due to their size.

I wan't something that will blow the roof off the house, would I have to go to an 18" or can i get a 10" to accomplish this?

just pretend the size of the living room is large, that way if it can blow the roof of that size room, i know it will in my room.

I'm looking in $3,000 and less range. Thanks

That's a great sub Nuck and the one I would've recommended however the tone of the OP led me to believe that 2 big SV's would be better...lol!

That JL is really the benchmark for a few reasons, it seems to me.

OP 04...you say to ssume an auditorium and you are going to stuff it into an average room, right?
Look at the JL subs, then go listen to it.
If you value musicality as well as earthquakes, you will like this sub.

However if you value earthquakes first...go with the SV. I'd take the JL for music and the SV for HT.

Interesting how many of the JL's have come up for sale lately on Agon...could be a good deal for someone on the hunt.

I've taken to not using a sub again for music....don't need no dadburned sub. The Hsu fo HT...right on!

For 3 large, you would really be better off with a pair of subs at half the cost each. You will get the same SPL, but with less distortion. With proper placement you will also minimize room nodes / standing waves.
While I am personally a fan of HSU Research, there are quite a few subs that'll do.... I live in SoCal, so for me, a trip up to OC and the HQ of HSU was an easy afternoon trip.
Depending on the size of the room, a pair of VTF3's w/turbo will do. Check the HSU site for the room size recommendation chart. Unless you have a room of 6000 ft3 or more AND enjoy it Very loud, a pair of the above mentioned VTF3's will do. The room I mention is HUGE 25' x 30' with a 10' ceiling.
My single VTF 2mk3 works well for me in a smaller room with more modest requirements.

A certain hard line between musicality and LF response agreed upon.

I like the fathom. I heard it forst at Holm Audio in Chicago with Mike when the Saturn was being auditioned. I went to the next room for JL with Joseph standmounts and Manley amps.

I heard it last at my regular shop, with Dynaudio 52's and Moon I5 amp.

The sub can handle anything, period.

Very hard to say how much is too much, with tonal balance in mind.

Nuck, are they JL HT better than their car subs? I had 12" JL's in my truck and didn't like them at all.

WEAK!!

Going by strictly the information in your first post, you'd want some pro drivers

A pair of JBL4642A subs would likely get around 135-138dB depending on the installation, or you may get over 140dB with other choices, or if you built one then it'd be even louder (150dB).

However if you ARE watching movies, then you should stay with SVS - probably...
