I've started a system with EPOS ELS minis (4ohm) with a Music Hall Trio integrated amp/preamp receiver (50 wpc). I like the simplicity in the Trio and my listening is mostly Classical and Javanese Gamelan. However the EPOS minis are not knocking me out. I will give them some more time but in the meanwhile, I'm gonna bring the system to some Minneapolis dealers to listen to some Totem Dreamcatchers with the Trio, and I'd like to hear the Magnaplanar wall mounted speakers as well. Any suggestions out there? I don't need deafening loudness, but a live, full sound that will do justice to Mahler 8 and deep gong sounds. I didn't know I was an audiophile until I tried building a system, and well, there's worse things to be addicted to. -Neal
If by ELS mini's you are talking about the ELS 3 I can understand. I have a pair and I like them however they are not a big sounding speaker...very open midrange though.
You appear to be looking at nice sounding speakers that need good (not big) power supplies to be at their best and although the Trio is 50 wpc it isn't a very powerful unit. I find the sound of the Trio to be pretty dull and lifeless as well (alot of folks say the same about my Rega Mira3 as well so I mean no insult)...my guess is that you probably won't find speakers that will help you with that part of it.
I think thet the Rega RS1's might be a decent match...(see integrated amps, RS3's may be the best match). The Maggies sound very good but I couldn't get them to sing until I moved into (and later back out of) separates.
