It takes the 0's and 1's (bits) from your CD's and coverts it to an analogue signal your pre-amp/amp can understand. Some DACs are much, much better than others.

Brewster, you'll have to be a bit more specific about what you need to know before we can launch into an explanation of the universe. Are you happy with that you are hearing? Is this just general confusion or are you thinking of trying a new system configuration? Have you tried placing something on the order of "how CD players work" into a search engine? .
