Hey there Mike,

What's great about the Special Edition of Viva La Vida is that it comes with both the 180g LP as well as the CD for the car etc. That also let's you do an A/B comparison between the Vinyl and CD versions. The packaging is great as well. More material for your new tubes.

That's funny Art. I just played that same LP on the new Dyno10x5 !

One time I put on a Stan Getz LP, w/Chic Correa and while it was playing I decided to switch to fm to see and unbelievably they were playing the same one simultaneously! I must be psycho!

Good one. That is in there somewhere but hasn't surfaced yet. I used to play that a lot back in the day.

'...Poor dumb rednecks, rolling logs
tired ol ladies kissin dogs..."

Playing some similar ones:
Jack McDuff- "Rock Candy",
a Prestige 2fer reissue remastered by Rudy Van Gelder with some tough horns, Jimmy Forrest, Red Holloway, Gene Ammons, and Harold Vick, and Guitars by Grant Green, Burrell, Benson

Another great reissue collection of Rudy's engineered recordings:
"Giants of the Blues Tenor Sax". (but I would call it bluesy Jazz)
Too many great players to name.

Dug out an old George Benson original LP from 1966 with Lonnie Smith, produced by John Hammond.

I have been playing two Bill Evans vinyl LPs, both twofers.
"California Here I Come", live at the Village Vanguard in '67 w/Eddie Gomez and Philly Joe.
The other double LP is a Verve reissue of 2 albums, the 1st from '63 w/Gary Peacock and Paul Moitan, and the 2d from '66 w/ Jim Hall.

On cd, I often play Evans and Jim Hall Undercurents, from 62.
Other Evans cds:
New Jazz Conceptions
Explorations
Portrait in Jazz
Jazz Round Midnight
The Bill Evans Album
You Must Believe in Spring
Trio 64

Neil- For the Bill Evans fan I recommend these pianists who I enjoy greatly:
Monk
Jimmy Rawles
Ray Bryant
Kenny Barron
Geri Allen
Jo Ann Brakeen
Patricia Barber
Paul Bley
George Adams
Mulgrew Miller
Tete Montelu
Tommy Flannagan
Jessica Williams
Brad Meldau
Hank Jones
Duke Jordan
Andrew Hill
McCoy Tyner
Torg Gustufsan
Bill Charlap
Richie Biarach
Winton Kelley
Chick Correa (esp w/Gary Burton)
Ganzalo Rubaclaba
Michel Camilo
George Shearing
George Cables
Cedar Walton
Kenny Drew
Roland Hanna
Danilo Perez
Elain Elais
David Hazeltine
Michel Camilo

Good addition Art.
2 of Art's guys I don't have:
Stefano Bollani
Marcin Wasilewski
?

I was trying to keep that piano list restricted to those which would appeal to a Bill Evans fan. Like some websites recommend "similar artists".

I left out some of my very top piano men because of the very different style, notably:

Monty Alexander, who I have seen 5 times. The last Ray Brown Trio and tour was GREAT.
Jay McShann. He really blurred the line between blues and jazz. Truly both simultaneously. I saw him 3 times.
Gene Harris who also spent a lot of time w/Ray Brown. Also bluesy but on the jazzy side of McShann.
Earl Fatha Hines. A favorite and important historical guy.
Chucho Valdez I saw at the Portland, OR Mt Hood Fest. He did what one Cadence Jazz mag critic said he can do, which is sit down and proceed to blow away every pianist on the planet. Stunning, and the rhythm section was the most astonishing I have ever heard. This is at a concert where Charlie Haden and Buster Williams played! Joe Locke, the great young vibes player was sitting with me and he explained that, like sports, those Cuban guys have to work a lot harder to compete for that job and get out.
Oscar Peterson. What can you say. I have a ton of his on both cd and LP.
and from your list, I am a big Herbie fan both the early be-bop, the fusion, the straight ahead and the recent collaborations with other stars (Love that cut with Santana!)

Benny Green is another Ray Brown Trio guy.
Jamal who I saw once in Seattle.
Cyrus who I have been getting into repeatedly this year.
Powell, like Tatum is mandatory for the history of jazz.
Hilton Ruiz I got into from Roland Kirk albums. He cut a few latin albums.
I also just played 2 Carla Bley LPs from the old stacks.
Nat Cole. The King, really. Just played an early trio LP yesterday. Sound quality not so good, some off early radio shows but great music.
Which reminds me, don't forget the pianists not known just as Pianists, such as Ray Charles, Dr John, Professor Longhair, Marcia Ball, Duke Ellington, Count Basie etc. Now that is getting a long way from Bill Evans where we started!

Sorry Art, I've only recently gotten into Evans and the last month or so I just haven't wanted to play anything else. It has been very satisfying to be immersed in music that special. Life changing from a musical perspective.

Neil I love Bill Evans I was just given ya a hard time...

The other one by Marcin Wasilewski is just called Trio. Before he was called out as the leader. I've seen him live twice as part of Tomasz Stanko's Quartet. Stanko is one the best trumpeter's in the world yet folks usually walk away talking about Marcin.

Anyone else notice that Costco is now selling vinyl?

Small selection, but all appear to be 180 gram audiophile pressings. For example 30th Anniversary Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd was $16.99 as was Coldplay's X&Y. Single albums were $12.99.

Summer in Wisconsin is too damn short, Stu. Gotta enjoy the outdoors while you can. Soon we'll be holed up in the house for another 7 months...I hate winter!

But it does make for more time with the stereo! And I've got some nice new vinyl over the last few months. The Rotel 1072 doesn't get nearly as much playing time as the tt.

Maybe this winter I'll get to that DIY tube amp I've been wanting to build too.

Queen - A Day At The Races currently spinning on the Rega. White Man sounds great.

Great album Art....

George Benson make an appearance right??

Also, Ron Carter plays some electric bass.

Miles first steps towards the different days ahead.

A milestone for Miles. Just like Birth of the Cool exiting the world of bop, Kind of Blue ushering in his modal work, ESP introducing the finest combo jazz ever heard before or since.
