Welcome to the thread Vader.

What are your sources?

I happen to agree with you on a couple things BTW. Any Floyd, and +95% vinyl trumps CD for me too!

I just spun The Wall on my Apollo. I haven't listened to it in a while. It brings back a lot of nostalgia - One of my earliest childhood memories is when my uncle would blast the album on his stereo, and encourage me and my cousin to jump on the couch and sing along to Another Brick in the Wall. Being about 3 or 4, it started my anti-education sentiment that carried me all the way through a Master's Degree

I saw a used vinyl copy in a vinyl shop back home (Last Vestige in Albany), but it was too beat up for me. It looked OK until I tilted it at the right angle. Scratches all over. Its a shame. The cardboard cover turned yellow. Maybe next time.

Also spun Aerosmith's Greatest Hits. Saw that album was well in the same shop. Same condition. The price reflected the condition of both albums, but I couldn't do it. At least the rest of the stuff I looked at and bought was a lot better.

Some recent CD purchases

Holly Cole (self titled)
- should be Holy Cow!. If ever there was a place Ms Cole should be, it's on this album. Usually Ms Cole's songs are take it or leave it with me. This one I could take more and more. The horns are sensational as is her voice - hauntingly beautiful jazz blues feel!

Nnenna Freelon - Blueprint of a Lady
- she has a unique style which is really growing on me. Very nice!

Rosemary Clooney - Songs for Lovers
- yep, great standards sung in the standard style, but very well.

Pink Martini -Hey Eugene!
- China sounds great. A diverse talent.

Graham Nash - Wild Tales
- a nostalgic trip back to my younger days. I had this on vinyl then. Love this old album.

Stevie Ray Vaughn - The Essential
- picked this cd up cheap. 2 discs of about 43 remastered tracks. What can I say? Pure SRV - smokin'

Out of Time - the movie soundtrack
- okay, I loved the music when I saw the film. This one will really test your gear. From Tiuhana style trumpets, Carribean percussion and bass that really digs deep.

Time I visited the used vinyl shop again.

I have the Holly Cole on vinyl and agree with your assessment.

I have the SRV on CD too.

I will search out "Out of Time".

If you have not found it yet, try "Kill Bill II" on either format.

Thanks Mike I'll watch out for it.

Be warned, the Out of Time cd is relatively short with several short tracks and only a few longer ones. But it is great music and a real system tester.

The Misfits - Collection I CD
Awful sound quality. A few catchy tunes, but the recording quality is so bad that you really understand whats being said, and all instruments blur together in a huge mess. I know that's part of the Punk Rock allure, but it could be so much better if they actually cared about production.

(I wonder if this is the one JV used for demoing kits back in the day?)

Telarc eventually sold over 800,000 copies of this 1978 recording. It was the demo record of its day. Years ago I stood in line to hear the big Infinity 4 tower system at CES in Chicago. They played this record. Of course they were using a high end TT and cartridge. It was the first time I felt a shock wave caused by speakers. Twelve 12" woofers powered by 3000 watts will do that. Back home the cannon shots caused my Thorens arm to fly off the record.

I do Stu...however I traded in some vintage gear at Echo Audio in Portland. So even if Roy doesn't stand by his gear (and by all accounts...including 3 dealers...he doesn't) Kurt at Echo stands behind anything that goes out of his doors. He believes in service first... and in fact the table has a small problem (not enough to keep me from playing it as you can see) and Kurt is already on it. The MH 2.2 is enough better than the Debut III (especially with the deal that I got) to justify the price difference. Frankly the 2.2 isn't far behind the 1Xpression IMO...and certainly the stock cartridge is better (since there's hardly worse). Next I will sell some more vintage gear and get a speed box and Herbie's mat before looking at a cartridge upgrade.

Art,

The Acryl It is definitely a huge upgrade IMO. If you're going to buy another Herbie's mat, skip it and pick up an Acryl It. It has the same basic benefits, but far more of it without being overdone. I tried it with and without the Herbie's mat, and with and without the felt mat. Without any mat is the best. The Herbie's mat on the Acryl It overdamps the sound to my ears.

Wow, you guys have some great music going on!
I have been too busy to post em, but made a running list:

Marian McPartland w/Benny Carter plays the Benny Carter Song book

Kenny Burrell- Lotus Blossom

Kenny Burrell- Stormy Monday Blues

George Shearing- Lullibies of Birdland, A Musical Autobiography

Bobby Hutcherson- Oblique w/ Herbie Hancock

Andrew Hill- Judgement w/Hutcherson
A couple of Blue Note classics.

Marcia Ball new: Peace Love & BBQ
A new release, highly produced. It's very good but I like best her simple 5 piece regular group: Let Me Play With Your Poodle and Live. Just guitar, tenor sax, bass, drum and her keys.

Ben Webster Live at the Renaissance,
1960, w/Jimmy Rawles, Jim Hall, etc.

Ben Webster- Soulville,
1957 w/Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, Stan Levey.

Scott Hamilton- After Hours
w/Tommy Flannagan + bass, drums

Neena Freelon- Maiden Voyage-
Herbie on title track, and w/ Joe Beck, Bob Mintzer, Dave Valentine, and more...

Neena Freelon- Heretage,
great band: Kenny Barron, Christian
McBride, Lewis Nash, plus sax and bone.

John Hammond- So Many Roads
early lp with Bloomfield-piano, Robbie Robertson- gtar, Levon Helm, drums, Garth Hudson- organ, Musselwhite plus...
I would prefer to get the reissue of '01 with 12 bonus tracks!

Lila Downs- La Sandunga
Good for fans but not my favorite (which is La Cantina).

Herbie Hancock-
River grammy winner, best album of '07
Wayne Shorter is extraordinary here!

Cassandra Wilson- Belly of the Sun
Interesting collection of songs.

McCoy Tyner- and the Latin All-Stars

Jimmy Cobb's Mob- Only for the Pure at Heart
featuring Bernstein, guitar (played w/Diana Krall after Malone left)

Ahmad Jamal- Pittsburg

Mark Knopfler- Screenplaying

Abercrombe and Towner- Sargasso Sea on ECM

Kenny Davern and Ken Peplowski: The Jazz KENection
w/Howard Alden, John Bunch, + bass, drums

Jack McDuff and Friends- Color Me Blue
w/Red Hollaway, Geo Benson, Ron Eschete, Phil Upchurch, Denise Perrier +

Diane Reeves- Good Night and Good Luck Soundtrack
She looks good on the cover of the new Jazz Times Mag.

Simone- Brazilian Collection

Anna Caram Collection- Postcards from Rio

Rosa Pasos- w/Ron Carter

Ralf Towner- Time Line, on ECM

John Prine- Fair and Square

Howard Alden- w/Montey Alexander

Paul Horn- Turtle Bay

"You must be organizing the vinyl."

I wish! I did completely redo the cds so I could find what I wanted. The LPs I just explore at random, instead of looking for anything specific. Serendipity!

I guess you and Art will have to do it for me.

Every day it is some distraction.
Today I had to dig the summer tires out of storage. Yes, still using studs and it is still snowing at night, but thawing in the day.
Had to do a lot of mechanical work on my house. Saved a fortune doing it myself but it was time consuming.
Got my taxes done on time at least.

Now it is getting time for a 'real' job, as I work seasonally in commercial and industrial construction.

Metheny/Burton is one of my favorite musical partnerships. I played everything they did on vinyl back in the day, and got the cds later.
For those unfamiliar, Metheney was only 17 yrs old when hired by Burton. Pat had asked to sit in out of the blue when Burton performed in Pats' home town. They let him audition backstage between sets and brought him into the band, just like that. The rest is history.

One of the greatest blends ever was Corea/Burton's Crystal Silence. Now they have released the New Chrystal Silence, taken from last years concert.

the new madonna album had me thinking about her live sound, and how she sounds live (no, she doesn't lip)... if only she sounded that good on this album... it was compressed all to hell.

her voice is much stronger and resonant live (likewise with Cher). I hate it how modern pop recordings suck the life out of vocals.
