I currently use analogue signal from my e-mu soundcard with gives left and right channeling to my amplifier.
I've been wondering what benefits I would get from using spdif or optical out instead?

Thanks

JJ, using the analog into the Azur negates the converters in the amp.

Recap..analog is converted to digital in a device known as a DAC, digital to analog converter, or an ADC, the opposite.

The better componant should have been bought, and should be used as such.

Transmission from source to converter can be done in several ways.

Optical will carry the signal to the IA, the converters inthe IA will do the, well, conversion. This connection enables 5.1 or more, I dont remember off hand.

SéPDIF is a great pcm or pure stereo connection enabled with the chance to run long distances with a simple(or not) coax cable, due to ites higher voltage.

Bottom line, run SéPDIF in the best case, optical (close 2nd) otherwise.
Play the converters in the IA.

And play flac, not mp3...please.

I had great fun with a CL pro card with all the options, albeit I know little more than I said already.

Cheers

just piggy backing on this thread...

am sure that different outputs (analogue, optical, coaxial etc) have specific uses. what are the advantages of each of them and what are they best used for.

Thanks Nuck. But I'm still left uncertain between the differences.

I was sure my emu soundcard has a DAC on it? My amp is now a Marantz pm6002. Anytime soon I should be recieving a digital t-amp but I'm only going to be keeping one.

Thing is, with digital the signal only comes from one output, where with analogue the signal is seperate left and right.

JJ, that is because the digital to analogue conversion is already done in the card.
Optical or S/PDIF carries all information in digital to another converter.

Now I do understand.
So you're saying the converter in an amplifier is better than that on a soundcard? Hence why you said to use spdif!
