Hi everyone,
I am looking for an entry-level receiver for my Wharfedale Diamond 8.3s. So far the options are Yamaha 559 and Harman/Kardon 137. However, I am not sure the 8 ohm HK can properly handle the 6 ohm Wharfedales. Any opinions?

If you your only running the 8.3 why are you considering surround receivers?

If want to go the 2-CH route, the HK3485/HK3385, the NAD 720BEE, and the Outlaw RR2150 are all good contenders.

Christopher: Because one day I am going to buy a sub and (maybe) everything else.

A sub works fine with stereo applications.

I am going to use it for both music and cinema, so it would be nice to have some video connectivity.

Most new 2-CH receivers have some video connectivity, but if you want to plan for a surround sound future, then you should go that route.

What's your budget?

Around $400.
Surround is not really a necessity. If I could find a Wharfedale-capable stereo receiver with component video inputs and outputs, a subwoofer output and maybe a couple of hdmi ports, it would be great. But what's wrong with a 5.1 box? Does it really sound much worse than a stereo one? (Sorry if that's a stupid proposition :-)

If $400 is the budget, the Marantz SR5001 (factory refurb)

is about as good as you could do. It's been my experience that Marantz surround receivers excel at 2-CH audio.

Christopher,
Thank you for the advice. This Marantz sure looks good. Unfortunately, here in Russia it goes for a minimum of $915, which is way beyond the budget.

In your price range look at some entry level Pioneer or Yamaha receivers.
