Great disc that features Trygve Seim on sax...saw he and his at a festival last year...unreal...also a part of this ensemble is Tomasz Stanko's pianist and bass player. These are consummate artists at the top of their game.

Weekend listenting;

Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell Vinyl

This is so much smoother on vinyl than on the CD. I had another album of this release but it was in too bad of shape to appreciate.

Peter Gabriel - Security vinyl

Quiex II limited edition printing. Am I the only one who did not know until today that if you hold a Quiex LP up to the light that it is translucent?

Now the best of the day......

Roger Waters - The Wall Live In Berlin Saturday 21st July 1990.

Oh what a line up of performers on this one. The Wall is a classic in of itself, not to mention what an outstanding recording this was. Sweet!

I thought it was a good weekend at my house, it's always a good weekend at Art's, looks like you may have trumped us stryvn. I almost bought a Hotel California on vinyl today but was kind of thinking I have it already. Bad Company played real nice on my kit too. I am also a big Squire fan. I have a Japanese import of his.

I saw Billy Squire way back when in concert with either AC/DC or Rush...can't remember which. It was in Portland whichever one it wasn't was had Pat Travers opening up for them....must be alzheimers...or the 70's and 80's were good to me. I've seen Rush 3 times and it would have been the last...seen AC/DC twice also would have been the last time...oh well.

I picked up a bunch more at Half Price Books mid week last week. This is so much fun.

I had a great experience with Hotel California on vinyl. This is certainly NOT one of my favorite Eagles tunes and I usually opt to not listen to it given a choice. But when I listened on vinyl....it was a new song. Opened up and very definitive. Each band member/instrument was clearly recognized here. A real pleasure.

I also play one album repeatedly but don't post that. I tend to get on an obsession with an artist and play them till I get tired of it.
I have a Gene Harris cd with Scott Hamilton and I must have played it 10 times. Last year I played Bill Charlap w/Hamilton about 30 times. Got on a McCoy Tyner/Bobby Hutcherson kick.
Probably played the new John Prine album 50 times.
I have just about worn out Marisa Monte's last two cds!
When Supernatural came out a few years ago I played it daily for 6 months. Last year I played Santana dozens of times.
Abbey Lincon's Turtle dream may hold a record.
Today I played Djavan twice. Knoffler Crimson twice.
Phil Woods w/Charlap twice. Yesterday Bennie Wallace w/Mulgrew Miller twice-Someone to watch over me.
Howard Alden Trio- Misterioso twice.
Frank Wess-Jazz for Play Boys, w/Burrell, Joe Newman, Freddy Green.
I have played Monty Alexander hundreds of times.
The last week, John Hammond-Push Comes to Shove about 6 times.
etc
Art- I have all the CTI on vinyl. I saw the big CTI band in Seattle in the 1970s. Freddy Hubbard, Turrentine, Jack DeJonnette, Airto, Hubert Laws and a B-3 Organ player ? George Benson.
That was my LP collection before I moved on to the Blue Note Classics, Miles, Mingus and Roland Kirk and Pablo and ECM.

In general, (not always - see below), I tend to play newly purchased recordings multiple times during the first month or so. This happened with David Gilmour's "On an Island" cd, played it virtually every day for the first month or so. I then put it away and haven't played it since.

On the other hand I picked up The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" dvd nearly 2 years ago and have yet to open it. But then again I still have unopened vinyl that I purchased back in the 70's. No real reason that I can think of for this odd behavior. I guess I'm just waiting for the right time.

I recently pulled out my $1.99 vinyl cutout of The Greatful Dead's "Wake of the Flood" purchased back in the early 70's. Though I'm not really a Dead fan I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this album. It's the first I've listened to it in over 30 years.

I don't wait that long but it can be awhile for some new releases before I listen. I've had the latest Neil Young release for about a month I think and I still haven't listened to it. Not in the mood yet I guess.

A few tracks from me...

Morph The Cat - Donald Fagen (Reprise)
Quite simply one of the finest recordings of any genre I've heard lately

Kare Sol - Per Gudmundson, Ale Moller, Lena Willmark (ECM)
Fiendishly difficult music to reproduce - screeching Swedish bagpipes and fiddles - a real torture-test for any gear

Damned If I Do - Ursula Rucker (iK7)
Fantastically well-produced spoken-word grooves

Subterranean Homesick Android - Radiohead (Parlophone)
Do I need to say anything more about Nigel Godrich's amazing production on this all-time rock classic?

Kai Gleusteen & Catherine Ordronneau (Crear Classics)
Lovely Violin & Piano duet covering Grieg and Dvorak recorded in a lively space (and on a piano) I know extremely well first-hand so this is a great reference CD for me particularly

Desolation Path - Vangelis (Universal)
From the new 25th Anniversary soundtrack release - the usual dreamy synths and cavernous reverb from Vangelis in a quite beautifully atmospheric soundscape

Baba Drame - Bill Frisell & The Intercontinentals (Nonesuch)
An amazing hybrid world group I've seen live several times - the CD is never as good as live but it's a good reference and beautifully recorded as always with Mr Frisell.

The Dawn - Erik Truffaz (Blue Note)
A far from perfect recording but I know it really well so it's a good reference for a system to try to make sense of - jazzy hip-hop

Cruel - Kate Rusby (Pure)
If Ms Rusby's wonderful voice makes the hairs on my neck stand-up I know I'm hearing something special

Nocturn - Kate Bush (EMI)
Stonkingly good production here from Mr Bush - the bass and drums on this track have to be heard to be believed - fat fat fat!

Salvador nao inerte - Virginia Rodriguez (Natasha)
I melt, I melt - make it stop please! Hauntingly beautiful and highly unique vocal from Brazil.

Friskiss & Svettis - Tsuumi Sound System (Alto)
Lively, melodic and dense Finnish folk-rock

Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who Remaster (Polydor)
How did they make anything sound this good in 1971?

Funeral Tango - Scott Walker Remaster (Fontana)
I love these big band arrangements and they still sound simply incredible FORTY years later!

Imidiwan Winakalin - Tinariwen (Independiente)
Hypnotic desert-funk from Mali that I've seen live several times, so again a good reference CD for me - does it get me jigging?

I Hate UPS!

Out of the kindness of his heart, Mike Wodek sends me and extra copy he had of BB King's Live At Cook County Jail on vinyl.

Its been 30 degrees and raining all day here.

UPS guy leaves it in a puddle and where the rain runs off the roof outside my door at 1:30. I got home at 6:30. No plastic bag to cover it with. No attempt to leave it with my landlord who is home all day with his car in the driveway. The delivery guy had to walk around the car; no chance he missed it. And this isn't the first time they've done it nor first comnplaint about it. Last summer, they left a Dell computer in my next door neighbor's driveway. Brand new computer in 3 boxes left out all day in a thunderstorm that flooded half of the parkways in the area.

As for my package - Box ruined, LP covers trashed. Ice on the LPs. Hopefully when they melt and dry, they'll work out.

If not, Mike's gonna get a nice check from UPS.

The Sabbath discs are all you said they'd be Stu. It's amazing the quality in these remastered discs! They've been given a workout over the last month. Thanks again.

Art, I had to pay $0.98 for mine. Still worth it...lol. I like a lot of the Windham Hill stuff.

I picked up 27 $0.98 lp's last wednesday at Half Price Books. I'm surprised at the quality of these things for a buck. Maybe it speaks to the quality of the MUSIC and not the actual piece of vinyl? lol....

And now it's.....well, Missing Persons. I can't say I've ever owned any of their stuff, but for a buck...?

Yusef Lateef- have some old ones on vinyl. Don't remember the titles. Cool guy: sax, flute, oboe.

James Lehmann, you are going to keep me busy with a post like that!! Right Art?
I had not heard the Bill Frisell & The Intercontinentals, but I have a half dozen albums by Frisell. He hangs out in Art's area I think?
I also have several cds by the Brazilian guitarist in that band, Vinicius Cantuaria.
I play lots of those Brazilian people! Have hundreds between vinyl and cd!
Virginia Rodriguez- I just have one cd of hers.
Have 4 by Cesaria Evora- who I saw in Seattle. Great singer and a hot big band. Distinctive sound.
Am wearing out Marisa Monte's 2 albums from 2007.
A great Brazil Pop singer/guitarist is Jao Bosco. Today played Na Onda Que Balanca. http://cliquemusic.uol.com.br/artistas/artistas.asp?Status=DISCO&Nu_Disco=2184

Herbie Hancock- Cool documentary today on cable.
Filming him in the studio working with many pop and jazz people. When Santana with a lady singing in a Mali language got going my wife stopped cooking and said to order that one!
Also shown with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Wayne Shorter and more.

Ed W. and fans of Sarah Vaughn:
Digging through the Brazil dept, I found these awsome classics:
I Love Brazil http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/1035003/a/I+Love+Brazil!.htm with Jobim in 1977!

Followed in '79 by Copacabana on Pablo.
Again in '87 Brazilian Romance http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1086468&style=classical

Also on the great Pablo label: "Crazy and Mixed Up" http://www.amazon.com/Crazy-Mixed-Up-Sarah-Vaughan/dp/B000000XLS
For a sample just listen to #5- The Island.
