New member Username: Greg_hPost Number: 1 Registered: Feb-08 | Hi everyone! I am currently shipping for new front speakers for my HT system. And, yes; I do listen to music on this very system, as well. My receiver is the Sony DA3100ES, DVD/CD is OPPO DV-980H Universal, All current speakers are Mirage: 5 Omnisats + Omni 10 Sub w/200 watts. My plan is to replace my fronts, and keep everything else. While we have really enjoyed this system for the past 1.5 years, I want more ummpphh for stereo listening. I listen to everything from the Carpenters to Pink Floyd, Smooth Jazz, to Dream Theater, and Porcupine Tree. I'm looking to spend between $600-$700 for new fronts. One dealer in my area (who I have done business with many times) is a Paradigm dealer. And, they are offering me a nice deal on the 7s. I'm going over today to demo them. I have never purchased any speakers without first listening to them. Problem is, these days, there just aren't many local dealers (Memphis area) that off very much in this price bracket. What are your thoughts on the Monitor 7s? Here's the room... http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7d809b3127cce86840319e3bb00000026108AZtmbZ q0aMw http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7ce20b3127ccebdf68600f2df00000026108AZtmbZ q0aMw |

If you want more ummmph for music listening I would start with a dedicated cd player after your speaker upgrade. The Oppo is a fine player, but would still be outmatched by a dedicated cd player for music listening. As far as "Musical" A/V receivers I am not sure if the Sony ES line would qualify. To each their own though. One step at a time. Upgrading your front speakers from what you have is a great start. Cheers. |
New member Username: Greg_hPost Number: 2 Registered: Feb-08 | Hi Nick! Well; I will tell you; not sure where this will lead. But; as a long time member at the Hoffman boards, I have seen systems way, way beyond my means. This Sony will most likely be my last amp. I'm 53 now. And, I have a few other hobbies. Now; back in the 70s, that was a different story. I lived and ate stereo. Today; we love our movies, and I am getting some really nice DTS 5.1 music disc, and even have the ELP BSS DVD-A. The Oppo shines for me. But; I do know what you mean. Last year, I sold off nearly all of my vinyl. No regrets. I don't have the time to be flipping records over anymore. In the old days, I loved it, though. Sure; I see these Avid tables, tube amps, and drool. Ha! But; not for me. Not to mention,,,, the price of some of the higher end gear. Anyway; I'm not sure what other speakers these guys carry anymore. They might still be an NHT dealer. Not sure. Another store carries B&W. But; the 686s are about all they have for the money I want to spend. I might go give them a listen. |

Have fun auditioning speakers. My recommendation would be to audition as much as possible in your price range. Let the winner live happily at your place. Keep us posted on your findings. |
New member Username: Greg_hPost Number: 3 Registered: Feb-08 | Yeah! I remember when I was never really where I wanted to be audio-wise. I was always searching for the next thing. I guess part of that was a result of my first wife's father owning a stereo shop. Ha! It seemed about every 6 months, I was changing systems. It was nuts! And, our introduction to HT was when I bought the ES and Omnisats in 2006. The 60" Sony TV, I bought in September. Today will be fun! It has been awhile since I have gone out like this just for speakers. In the 70s, when I was in Tucson, there were a lot of shops to visit in your audio pursuit. Things sure have changed. |
Gold Member Username: Nickelbut10Post Number: 1148 Registered: Jun-07 | Indeed they have Greg. My dealer told me back in the early 80's here in Kingston there were over 6 Audio shops just on the main street of the city. You use to be able to just hop from one shop to the next, back and forth. Now there is only one left standing on the main street. Things need to change. |

With places like Best Buy and Circuit City, the mom and pop shops became obsolete. You no longer need to go from shop to shop trying to find the best thing. They're under one roof! Hopefully everyone sees through my sarcasm. |

New member Username: Greg_hPost Number: 8 Registered: Feb-08 | Here we go! Paradigm Monitor 7s http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8AZtmbZq0aM1Lzs Right now; listening to Cowboy Junkies, "The Trinity Sessions" w/the subwoofer off. Clean! After I got them connected last night, we played, "Blow by Blow", and some Alan Parsons Project. 'With the Sub on. After dinner, a buddy and I sat back and watched, the Porcupine Tree "Arriving Somewhere" DVD. My wife and his girlfriend decided to go to the Casinos last night (all night ). So, we 'bached it! These speakers are wonderful! This guy has become as big a fan of PT as me. He and I were simply blown away! The Sony ES, and these speakers work beautifully together. And, the Omnisat center is fine. Later, I will probably get the Paradigm center. For now; this is really, really, nice. I purchased the floor models, too. $600.88 (including tax). Money well spent! I did audtion the B&W 685s And 686s first. Wow! Really nice, too! This shop ran them with a Marantz of about equal power as my Sony ES (120watts per channel). The B&W 685s w/stands would have cost me $750 + tax. Then; we went to Berclair. And, like at the other shop; I played Carpenters, Blackfield, Flim and The BB's, Dream Theater, and a little Gamalon. To my ears, and my friends, the Paradigm Monitor 7s sounded better than the B&Ws. Karen was amazing! He ran a Sony ES w/120 watts at this shop. |

Gold Member Username: Stu_pittIrvington, New York USA Post Number: 2471 Registered: May-05 | Nick, There's nothing wrong with using an iPod, so long as you use it as it was intended for - a portable solution. You'd be surprised how good an iPod with good headphones (that aren't too hard to drive) and uncompressed music can sound. If it weren't for my iPod, I'd loose my mind on all those road trips. Traveling with an NCAA Division I Basketball team can get pretty monotonous. Greg, Sorry to hijack. Glad to see you got what you like. |
