I here everyone suggesting to get SPL meters for their speakers, but I am clueless as to what the point of getting one is, and if I got it how to use it, and how to make it effective for me and my system....

Generally the SPL meter is used along with a test disk (Avia is quite popular). You use it to balance the output of your speakers (usually a HT setup) so one or more speakers are not overpowering the rest. I've used mine most extensively in balancing my subs. Low frequencies in a room can be a real beast to tame. See my posting on the "Timbre matching to Axioms" thread.
