I know I'm new (first post in fact)
So I have a question for my Sister first off
my sister just picked up a set of cerwin vega cls15's
Frequency Response: 26 Hz - 20 kHz
Peak Power: 400 watts
Sensitivity (1w/1m): 94 dB

now, she thought she could drive them with her old sony reciever (sorry i don't know the specs) its 100w/pc

clearly thats not going to work
I know from the little bit of reading I have done that Cerwin's are efficent...
I also know they are more of a party head / banger speaker..which works out great for her :D

she is basically looking for something to drive these speakers to a reasonable (maybe the odd unreasonable) level without distortion/clipping at a reasonable price.

you guys are the experts, should she go with a power amp / receiver, ??
I'm really at a loss what to tell her, I'm not used to dealing with anything with that high a wattage rating

any help would be great, i know there are a few cerwin fans out there :P

Thanks Steve

thanks for the link to the other thread there, that is some good reading, the outlaw rr2150 gets a pretty nice review.

she has been considering a Harman Kardon HK3485

any thoughts?

It's a very nice receiver and, as the other thread suggests, HK should do well with CV's.

With a raring of 94db, those speakers should play awfully loud. If the Sony is shutting down, either the speakers a harder to drive than I remember, the sony is an awful POS, or there are wiring issues.
I would double check the speakers terminations before jumping to equipment issues.
Then ditch the Sony ASAP, LOL.

Well she bit the Bullet and ditched the POS Sony :P
got the Harman Kardon HK3485, got a nice deal off ebay around 300$CAD, seems to be working nicely, I haven't witnessed it yet...geographic restrictions, but I did suggest her making a large Duct tape X across her nice front plate glass window, just from her talking about dishes moving in her cupboard.
I'll keep posted on how she likes it after more than a week or so

Thanks guys
