Bronze Member Username: Mnr3Post Number: 33 Registered: Jan-06 | for various reasons--I'm looking at getting a sonos , a network hard drive and integrating an ibook, all with digital out, and don't own a very good cd player (but do have a 2001 yamaha dvd and more recent sony dvd that could be transports)--I'm starting to look at getting an external dac. Unless someone convinces me to get an amp in some form factor that has a decent dac, but I already have several "lesser" amps, an old yamaha, a sony from the 90's, a little sanyo mini unit from the 80's that I'm going to integrate into the Sonos zones. anyway, as in every area of this field and forum, there are choices galore, hype and marketing to go along, and a mind-boggling range in prices. given that none of the above sources are truly hi-fi, I'm thinking a mid-priced dac will do for an entry into the brave new digital world and was hoping for some suggestions. I suppose going up to the benchmark model is not out of the question, but unlikely, esp. since I've seen the following suggested: the channel island, http://www.ciaudio.com/ and there are probably a dozen listed at http://www.pacificvalve.us/ including a few from lite audio that they "mod" any comments or experiences with the models that range in price from 300-800 clams or this plan to build a system around some digital media center-streamer (to be lossless format, not ipod mp3). comments on the merits of non oversampling etc. welcome as well thanks |
