New member Username: Night_goatPost Number: 4 Registered: Aug-07 | use this receiver to power two outdoor speakers and two small speakers in the house w/Sub-woofer. What I'd like to know is: 1. What would be best the choice for sub and interior small speakers? My wife likes the small Bose speakers because they're small and cute! 2. What receiver source/set-up best pulls this off? How do I shut the out door speakers off and turn the indoor's on and vice-versa? In the old days you just had A and B or both, which I liked because it was easy. 3. Should I scrap the HK 225 and buy a vintage amp/reciever and then buy the Bose(Accutrimass-??)set-up to make it easy on me? Your help in this endeavor is greatly appreciated! |

My first question would be if you have an owner's manual for the AVR 225? If not then you can go here and get one: Which brings me to my last comment. Unless you own an Ipod or a modded computer STAY AWAY from Bose for any other speaker application. I hope I'll receive a response for my effort Jeff,If not from you then Bose home audio speaker fans if so then the facts and flame-thrower is at the ready. Good luck! ER |
New member Username: Night_goatPost Number: 5 Registered: Aug-07 | Eric, Thanks for the information! I've got a few more points and/or questions: 1. I do have the Manual 2. It looks like I can pull this off by using the 5-Channel Stereo mode for when I want sound outside and inside. What I can't tell is; if I can use the front speakers with a Sub-Woofer. Like I said earlier, my wife won't do bookshelf speakers. They're going to have to be small, so I need the sub. So the plan is to use the outdoor speakers as the surround speakers as(LARGE) and then two front speakers inside(SMALL) with a sub-woofer. The maual is not real clear that this will work and I don't have a sub to hook-up to see. 3. The next problem is if I only want music inside or outside. I think then I have to change the mode and I really don't see one for surround speakers only. So that might do me in. 4. I don't have any particular affinity for BOSE, it's only that my wife can deal with the accutramass small speaker look. 5. How do I hook a sub up to a Vintage Receiver, if I decide to go that route? They don't come with sub inputs and I need the sub to pull this off. Thanks, |

No but seriously I would still avoid the Acousticmass system which is way overpriced as compared to other sub/sat systems that offer much more in terms of sound quality. If it's tiny speakers or the highway take a look at these: http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/home-theater-speaker-systems/athena-tech nologies/PRD_299491_4282crx.aspx http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/home-theater-speaker-systems/boston-acou stics/PRD_333156_4282crx.aspx http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/home-theater-speaker-systems/cambridge-s oundworks/PRD_299803_4282crx.aspx http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/home-theater-speaker-systems/canton/PRD_ 129579_4282crx.aspx http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/home-theater-speaker-systems/earthquake/ PRD_329788_4282crx.aspx http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/home-theater-speaker-systems/infinity-sy stems/PRD_172164_4282crx.aspx All of the above while not having quite the sound quality and dynamics as their same larger counterparts will sound much better than the Bose whose bass module produces little usable response below 100Hz!! Some folks are a little confused about speaker settings on a receiver. Always set speakers to "large". All channels in DD 5.1 and beyond are full audio bandwith 20Hz to 20KHz so by setting to "small" you will limit bandwith to the front and center channel speakers, not a good thing. This has nothing to do with actual physical speaker size. A small sat speaker with a 2"-5" driver really cannot produce any usable(coherent) bass below about 70Hz anyway so it cannot be harmed by a lower freq. signal sent to it since it cannot produce it. A speaker this small must be used with a sub. Unlike the examples above the Bose acousticmass system requires you to make the tremendous sonic compromise of wiring your speaker outputs directly to it. Naturally this will defeat the amp inside the HK,which while not elitist hi-fi is still 100x better than the amp inside the Acousticmass bass module, and the amp inside the Bose bass module will run the show. Forget about the vintage rec.,you have a fine rec. Although the combos I suggested above might sound a little weak outdoors w/out their sub, they will still sound better than the Bose which will be shrill and fatiguing without the bass module. Use the 5 channel stereo mode if you want to hear the speakers outside, which why would it matter if the indoor speakers are on at the same time? Use two channel stereo for indoor speakers only. One of these sub/sat systems will eliminate the need for a speaker switcher and still give you very small speakers and still leave you with the option of surround sound. Good luck and let me know your progress. ER |
