Silver Member Username: Mike3Wiley, Tx USA Post Number: 634 Registered: May-06 | I finally got my Roger Waters "Amused to Death" on vinyl. Really different than the CD. The effects are nil but the musicality of the LP is frigin thing of beauty. See my post on Reference that I copied regarding the CD. There was a restaurant critic in Chicago affectionately called the "Food Dude" who would rate local (yeah like anything is local in Chicago) restaurants by Food, the meal, and Circuses, everything else, decor, plates, ambiance, whatever. So for the CD version of Water's work I would give it an 8 for food (music) and a 10 for circuses (effects, soundstage, imaging, etc.) For the LP of the same I would give it a 10 for music and an 8 for circuses. It almost comes off as being recorded from different Masters, that's how different the two are. |

I have to say that I have no home theater so it is just a plain Samsung DVD player, but it is such a great session. Stewart Duncan is on fiddle (played on Prine's German Afternoon). The package comes with a cd too, which of course sounds much better on the Azure 640C. But for you guys with the real thing! It is not a remake of the new album: All the Road Running. They also do some songs from Shangrala, Dire Straits etc. |

Outstanding. It's great when the kids are in the room while I'm enjoying this album and you hear cockpit in back or faucet dripping way in the other room. Kids heads turn, they look and say things like, "Dad, what's that noise? Is the water draining in the sink?" "If the dog doesn't sound like it's coming from the yard next door your speakers are out of phase." |

Had never heard her but had read a 5 star review in Down Beat of Modern Cool, up to that point, her masterpiece. Saw her again more recently in Seattle at the Triple Door, a great club. Anyone going to Seattle MUST go there. I also saw Bobby Hutcherson there this year. Beautiful! I am trying out music recommended here so keep it up guys. |

If I get a chance I will catch up on the numerous recordings I have spun on both sources. Tonight I was going to listen to just the title track of the CD The White Stripes "Icky Thump". Wow, this is engaging. Sort of like Kid Rock, Grand Funk RR, and Deep Purple got together and added a female singer. Their tracks just pound you, yet the complexity of the presentation captures you. I know where there is a sealed Vinyl of this for sale. Hmmm, might be worth it. Certainly not everyone's cup of tea. Needs a sign on the cover "Enter at your own risk!" |

A classic example we saw: On his final tour Stevie Ray came to Fairbanks, Alaska and performed in a hockey rink. They put down a hard floor to walk on but don't allow people walking near the stage. Naturally every one ignored the plastic barrier tape and the place was packed to the stage. The rent a cops started trying to throw people out who were in the forbidden area. When Stevie saw that he stopped playing, stepped to the edge of the stage and with a sweeping arm gesture he signaled everyone down from the bleachers onto the floor saving his fans from expulsion. We flew down and filled the "ice" and no one got kicked out. He was in charge! I can see him like it was yesterday. |

I dug that out because I saw that group live this year. Got my Rotel RCD 1072! Now I have to play EVERYTHING on it. So far have tested it on the newBobby Hutcherson .... Sentimental... in the vinyl room. Now to tear the living room apart and put it and the Rotel RT 990BX Tuner there. Fabulous! |

She brought her band and just flat jammed. She is also part of Charles Lloyd's ensemble and was excellent as an accompanist as well. Also attended her lecture and Q&A session. |

Gate did open there one time with a big band like on his American Music, Texas Style. Like Room Full of Blues a cool mix of a blues horn section and guitar lead. (Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard). He was in Fairbanks on the record coldest day ever! It was -70 and nobody went out to hear music. Late 1980s. I was told by people working there that he was sick and laying on the deck backstage until show time, then he hot up and put on a good show for the half dozen fans who made it. What a trooper. He could have just stayed in the hotel but did not disappoint a hand full of fans. I was on vacation away from Alaska at the time but when I asked him about it in a bar in Seattle, he just rolled his eyes and said forget that one. |

Other shows too. So well designed. Tula's is fun for local talent but Triple Door is a world class venue. I go to a lot of shows at Jazz Alley too but no where near as well designed as the Door. On your suggestion I pulled out Gettin to It ! |

I totally agree with your assessment of those 3 clubs. There's also a jazz record Store over on Jackson I think, it's downstairs...I love Seattle. We're thinking about heading up there next month for a classical concert....no trip to Seattle is complete without .99 records at Jive Time records. Also the husband/wife team that runs The Landing are very finicky about their records which is good for us....oh yeah Bud's Jazz records, that's the name of the place on Jackson. Drive, don't walk, the neighborhood can be a bit eventful. Hmmm wonder who's at the "Door" next month... |

Yes I like Bud's a lot but not easy for parking unless you are going to the neighborhood anyway. Pionier Square lots of fun. China Town great eats. (The single best restaurant value in Seattle: Tamarind Tree!) The Landing has a Naim system but they never turn it up enough to hear. I was in Seattle when Oscar was there but couldn't spring for the price in spite of being a big fan. Do you have Oscar Peterson: Exclusively For My Friends. I have posted that one before. Great sound quality and music. |
