I have a new Pioneer VSX-D914 receiver pushing two JBL E90's. When I turn the volume to about
-10 db, the receiver shuts down after about 2-3 minutes. Why could this be happening?

Are the JBLs 4, 6 or 8 ohm speakers? If you dont know you can check it from the badge/label behind the speakers.

These JBLs are 8 ohms. The receiver is set for both 8 & 6 ohm speakers, supposedly.
