Bronze Member Username: PatrickbatemanMA Post Number: 75 Registered: Oct-05 | Hey guys, Any thoughts on Paraound A23, Rotel 1070 or a Rotel 1080 for my Era D5's? Would the 200w of the Rotel 1080 be a big advantage over the other two? |
Gold Member Username: NuckPost Number: 8237 Registered: Dec-04 | Hi PB. Between the 3, the 1070 lacks balanced inputs, while the others do. Depending on your preamp, this could well be a deciding factor for you. The D5's are 87db efficient and would require a goodly amount of power to 'rock the house' if thats what you want. |
Bronze Member Username: PatrickbatemanMA Post Number: 76 Registered: Oct-05 | Hey Nuck You know I sometimes may want to rock the house I am actually using a Marantz receiver for now, and in the future will be using another receiver, so the balanced inputs are not a concern. I do have a pretty small room, 12x18, so I am looking for enough power without breaking my bank. I have found some very good local deals on the above amps. |
Silver Member Username: LeonskiPost Number: 166 Registered: Jan-07 | I have the 1070 and it is fine into my low-efficiency Magnapans. If you really gotta have a lot of juice, the 1070 will turn into a 360 watt monobloc. So, you'd need a PAIR of 'em, and some good house wiring, |

Gold Member Username: NuckPost Number: 8248 Registered: Dec-04 | PB, in that range, you are paying for a proper transformer based balanced system. Go lower if you don't need the balanced. The 1070 has lots of guts, just heard it again recently. Again, if you are not playing balanced, the 1070 is the winner of your group. |

Bronze Member Username: PatrickbatemanMA Post Number: 79 Registered: Oct-05 | Hey guys, I did some shopping and decided to go with the Parasound Halo A23. Should be in by Tuesday next week. Ill give an update when it comes in, now how do I make the time pass until then.. |
Gold Member Username: NuckPost Number: 8403 Registered: Dec-04 | Post 80 coming up? Now that you have an amplifier with balanced inputs, it's time to ditch the receiver thing for a balanced pre-amp, Patrick. |
Bronze Member Username: PatrickbatemanMA Post Number: 80 Registered: Oct-05 | Ya I know, I know However I am using it in a HT/Stereo set up so I do need the receiver |

Gold Member Username: NuckPost Number: 8407 Registered: Dec-04 | Chico, a balanced system lifts a common reference, isolating the circuit and lowers the noise floor by 6db or so. A proper balance uses an isolated transformer, others are done electronically and are termed as balanced, but lack the full benefits. https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-audio/335415.html |
Bronze Member Username: PatrickbatemanMA Post Number: 81 Registered: Oct-05 | My Halo A23 arrived today. I got it hooked up and have been listening for a few hours. At low to moderate levels I do not really notice much difference. At higher levels though I definately can tell a difference. Mid range does not sound strained; voices seem much more holographic, bass is tighter and overall it can just play louder. My new concern is my TV/AV stand. I dont believe I have enough ventilation and need to look into a new one. |

"A proper balance uses an isolated transformer, others are done electronically and are termed as balanced, but lack the full benefits." A true differential circuit is the best and most expensive way to achieve a fully balanced circuit from input to output. Transformers are often used in lower priced equipment in order to provide a semblance of balanced lines by way of the input/output connections, but the line runs single ended, or unbalanced, for at least a portion of the circuit which provides no signal to noise benefit. If a designer chooses to do the conversion from unbalanced to balanced and vice versa by using very high quality transformers, which will be quite expensive, the added electronics of a differential circuit can be reduced but the designer is merely choosing one technique over another. A fully differential circuit in all places is the best and most quiet way to go but is uncommon in consumer audio while being more common in professional equipment. . |

New member Username: AhantzaPost Number: 4 Registered: Nov-07 | Hi, there. I have recently bought a pair of Paradigm Studio 60 v3 speakers and I am in the process of selecting the amp. Any ideas on what's best to choose among Cambridge Audio CA-640A v2, NAD C352, Denon PMA-1500AE,or Marantz PM-7001?? Music preference is jazz, rock and their fusion. Any words of wisdom would be very much appreciated. |
