I've got an old turn table (united audio), a Yamaha amp (CR-240) and some advent speakers. If I play the radio i have all the volume i could ever want. But when i play a record, I have to crank the volume to 11 to get a sound that i can't hear in the next room. Is this a common complaint (and one that implies that i've got the wiring screwed up) or do i have a serious problem with my turntable?

guy, dont go to the other inputs, your tt has a micrometer-small input for those, so 'phono' it must be.
Is your table in working condition? Do you know?
The input is looking for a specific mm or mc input, with or without ground, do you know the difference?

.

Given the age of the turntable, I would make a quick guess that you either have no stylus on the cartridge or the table requires serious attention to cleaning all its connection points. I lean heavily towards the former.
