Just ordered a Rega P5 in silver with external power supply and Dynavector 10x5...could have used a better cartridge but hey I think it will do for now. Know anyone who wants a fabulous P3?
I have to say I have a very very high regard for that combination. I've used it on several occasions. I prefer the P5 with the TTPSU over the P7 which I find disappointingly laid back. The P5/TTPSU has a lot of swing, power and enjoyment.
The 10x5 is a great cartridge in its own right. True, you can buy better, but then you get into the messy game MC cartridges and external phono stages. The 10x5 gives an awful lot for its outlay.
Ensure you have the deck on something flat and horizontal, and enjoy!
You only need one spacer. A few years ago when the only 3-point mounted arm from Rega was the RB900, they used to make tiny (i.e. less than 1cm dia) spacers, one per leg. Nowadays they make a single spacer which looks like a ring with legs at 120 degrees. the 10x5 only needs raising by 2mm, so you only need one spacer.
Thanks Eric...Check my profile for all of the system details. I have pictures over at Audiogon under Member Systems, Budget Minded, Rega = Synergy on a Budget.
There was a mix up on shipping so I won't receive it for another week or so...
Unfortunately I received a damaged unit which must go back. However I have been listening to it as the damage is more cosmetic than anything. Sounds fabulous as I thought it would. It is taking some time break in but getting better all of the time.
What I can't believe is that in spite of lowering my price I can't seem to sell the P3. First time I have ever had difficulty selling anything at A'gon. Tommorrow I will have to look at Ebay.....ick!
Strange isn't it. Timing I guess. I added one word, legendary, to the add. That and the coupons must have done the trick. Someone is gettin' a heck of a deal.
Break in is proceeding as planned, how unfortunate that I'm breaking in a table that is going back to Rega and have to start over again, however the news is good. The P5/10x5 combo is truly remarkable. Much better than the Apollo which I really like. The 10x5 tracks so much better than the Elys 2. Records that I thought were ruined are turning out to be special experiences.
Comparing the Apollo to the P5 with say for instance Alberta Hunter's Amtrak Blues was truly a revelation. There was no way in which the vinyl didn't sound better. Detail and subtlety were on tap in spades. Voices and instruments were more accurate in scale and timbre and imaging more precise. I played the P5 for more than 12 hrs yesterday and it just continued to get better the entire time.
Interesting how much more engaging records are than CD's IMO.
Even though it's annoying to have to start from scratch, at least you get to 'practice' on one . It will also be interesting to see if the sound from your replacement is similar or not.
Do there tend to be subtle differences amongst the same model with turntables?
