Hello, I'm new to this forum and kind of a newbie when it comes to audiophile stuff. Anyway, here's my predicament. I recently purchased a pair of Polk LSi7 bookshelf speakers to use in my master bedroom, and I purchased an "open box" Pioneer VSX-D711 A/V receiver to power them. It's working fine so far...but I'm concerned that I'll have problems in the future, as I've been reading alot since I bought these "4 Ohm" speakers, that they can overload inexpensive amplifiers. Then I noticed in the Pioneer manual, that I should be using 8-16 ohm speakers. If I'd have known that, I wouldn't have purchased the speakers. So, here's my dilemma. Can anyone out there tell me if my fears are real, and that I shouldn't be using this receiver with these speakers? And, if so can you recommend a good either A/V receiver or Stereo amp that will do a good job driving these speakers, for around the $500 range? Is it possible to find an amp that will drive these speakers in this price range? If not, I may just sell the speakers and get some 8 ohm speakers. Thanks in advance, for any help anyone out there can give me!

Try the NAD 743 or a discontinued 742. They will drive the Polks easily. Saturday Audio usually has very good prices on NAD.

Darrel,

"If it works, don't fix it". About the worse thing that can happen is that the Pioneer receiver will go into temporary overload protection - just go silent, while it recovers. If this happens repeatedly, then you have a problem.

Thanks for your input. For now, I decided to purchase the Yamaha RX-V640 A/V receiver. I was able to purchase it for about $150 off because Yamaha has come out with the RX-V650 receiver. It has a "high current" amp system in it, which is able to power my Polk Lsi7's, although in the future I'd like to go with a more powerful system for these speakers. So far they sound great with this new receiver. Much cleaner, less muddy sound with better imaging. With the Pioneer it seemed like you would hear the speaker which you were closest to, unless you get right between them. With the Yamaha, they seem to blend alot better, and you don't seem to have to be sitting right at the "sweet spot" to get good sound from both sides. Thanks for all of your help.

DRW. Great. I thought you already had the Pioneer. If not, FWIW I agree with therealelitefan. But as before, "If it works, don't fix it". A good motto! All the best.
