I'm a 19 year old college student just beginning to take an interest in home theater and audio..I was wondering..I have subwoofers for my car, is there any way those can hook up to a receiver or anything for use indoors? Like I said I'm new so if this is a completely stupid question I'm sorry but all the help I could get would be appreciated!!!
OK, my subs are not too powerful I would say, at least in comparison to other car subs. I think they are about 225 W RMS, but I'm sure this might be too much for my Sony Receiver. I can see right on the front of the receiver it says 100W x 7, do you think this could work?
Anyway, what you need to worry about would be the impedance handling of your receiver. If you are using car subs, they will typically be 4 ohms and cheap home receivers cannot typically handle a 4 ohm load. The usually go, pfft!
If you are using 2 - 4 ohm subs you'd want to connect them in series.
Or you can check out parts express.com and get a BASH amp. You can get one for less than $200 and I believe it can handle a 4 ohm load. You then build the amp into your sub enclosure.
Stephen, I have nothing against a subwoofer designed for home use at all. The thing is, like the other guys pointed out, I'm a little short on funds at this point in my life and I already have the car subs. Plus, while I'm at school I don't have my car with me, so I figure why not try and get some use out of those subs? Basically my interests are for music purposes, I love music with some nice bass to it, so I was just trying to see what I could incorporate with what I already have.
My opinion would be to sell the car subs and obtain something for home use. I'm not saying to spend thousands of dollars or anything, but I'd imagine that something on the order of a Dayton sub or two would do the job quite nicely for a very reasonable price. Not to mention the job of calculating a good enclosure size, port measurements, etc are done for you.
