It seems that the last of the Wharfedale Diamond 8s are currently back in stock @ Amazon.com

The 8.2s are $199 delivered, not bad.
The 8.3s are $199 plus delivery, still not bad.
The Diamond 8 Center is $134.99 delivered, very nice.
The WH-2s are $99 delivered, nice.

...and a few others.

Does anyone feel the 8 series speakers built quality is bit "flimsy"? Those grills are god-awful! In the 9 series seems a tremendous improvement in build quality.

Would you consider the Athenas a comprable, or perhaps better speaker at this price point?

Grills are pretty irrelevant to me, I just love the 8.2's warm mids which the Athenas cannot match.

Edster,

I know I might have asked you this, but have you heard the AV123 Onix X-LS?

There is no doubt the grilles are flimsy. Their purpose seems to be temporary speaker protection. Once they came off mine, I never put them back. I think there is a perceptible difference in sound produced by Athena and Wharfedale speakers. Choice would depend on the type of music played. I do not doubt the quality of Wharfedales.

CM,

unfortunately, no.

They seem to have enjoyed almost uniformly positive reviews though in head to head comparisons were bested by the Ascend 170SE, which is after all another $100 more per pair.

I was planning on ordering a pair for home demo purposes only, had to cancel due to my impending move.

Edster,

I'm gonna pick up a pair as soon as some new finishes become available. I want a pair in rosewood, I REALLY wish I had sought them out when they were offered in Piano Finished Rosewood about a two months ago, but they're all gone now.

Farmington...wow, that's right at the Colorado border! Must be beautiful.

Yeah I'm really looking forward to Santa Fe. Was there for a week a few days ago...it's everything Houston is not: low low humidity, clean air, lush unmanicured foliage, hills & mountains not pancake flat. Only downside was that coming from sea-level Houston, the 7000ft. elevation there made running much harder, I was breathing so hard the first 10 minutes that I scared all the nearby dogs who started barking like crazy, LOL! Ran 4 miles in the time that normally takes me to do 6 or 7, with the exhaustion I normally feel after doing 9-10. Strange thing is that calisthenics semed to be a lot easier, I was able to easily crank out 50 pushups while in Houston I can barely do 30-35 at a time.

Supposedly it takes about 2-3 weeks before your body gets totally used to the 20% less oxygen in the air.
