I have a Harmon Kardon HK 3380 receiver. Can I hookup an equalizer using the Preamp Out/Main In connections to the Line In/Out on the equalizer? Will this affect all of the components - phono - tape -CD?

Uh huh.
Bill, the tape loop is meant for an eq.
Tape out to the EQ in, reverse the return leads and enable the tape monitor.
