Threads here:- New Quad ESL models Quad Electrostatic Loudspeaker 63 The latest Stereophile and Hi-Fi News have some articles on these speakers. Hi-Fi News has its contributors proposing their top ten Hi-Fi components from the last 50 years. I think the ESL 57 is in every list. Also see the book "Quad the Closest Approach" reviewed here: Stereophile Book Review: Quad: The Closest Approach quadesl.org > Quad - "The Closest Approach..." A Review |

Gold Member Username: John_aLondonU.K. Post Number: 4379 Registered: Dec-03 | That's like judging a painting by how it sounds. Personally, I think they look great. The new ones are prettier by far. All speakers sound better with one's eyes closed, anyway... Or they can be concealed behind a chiffon curtain. |

I would love to hear these quad electrostats someday to understand all the profoundly positive remarks. I have no doubt you have something special in your living room John. Besides Mrs A that is. |

Gold Member Username: John_aLondonU.K. Post Number: 4381 Registered: Dec-03 | MR, "#2 - disagree" The ESL 57 trim and finish were by Chritopher Heal of Heal's (smart furniture place). They have nice little oak legs. Three per speaker. |
Gold Member Username: ChitownPost Number: 1138 Registered: Apr-05 | The reason I thought everyone would have seen it, is because it was featured prominantly on the front page of MSN.com. Perhaps not everyone used MSN.com as their home page. It's interesting that he calls it the best sounding stereo system, yet really fails to mention what receiver he used. It should have said best speaker system. |
Gold Member Username: John_aLondonU.K. Post Number: 4385 Registered: Dec-03 | Stof, Yes, "not everyone used". I thought the same as you - Mr Krakow only writes about speakers. But then, the receiver can be almost anything, so it is nearly the same thing. You will hear it. |
Gold Member Username: ChitownPost Number: 1139 Registered: Apr-05 | Yes, uses I don't agree that the source of the sound amplification is not important as the speakers. It would have been interesting to know what "low power" receiver he used. Did he mean a tube amp? |
Gold Member Username: NuckPost Number: 3265 Registered: Dec-04 | http://www.audioclassics.com/detail.php3?detail=VII&nav=cat But they are not on furniture legs. Low powered receiver not included. Shipping weight!?!? |
Gold Member Username: John_aLondonU.K. Post Number: 4388 Registered: Dec-03 | Stof, What I mean is that I don't think there is any change of amp/receiver that would come close, in its effect on sound quality, to a change from most electromagnetic suspension speakers (meaning voice-coils attached to cones in boxes) to Quad ESLs. Not as long as the amp/receiver works. I can't comment on horn-loaded speakers or stratospherically-priced conventional speakers like those Wilson's (Thanks Nuck!). I like the Wilson ads in Stereophile; that's as close as I can get to a comment... |
Silver Member Username: ShahrukhdMumbai, Maharashtra India Post Number: 142 Registered: Nov-04 | I personally think it is highly immature for anyone to say "The world's best-sounding stereo system"! It is - like a friend on another forum put it - akin to "The world's most beautiful woman" or the world's best car! Sheesh! |
Silver Member Username: My_rantzAustralia Post Number: 653 Registered: Nov-05 | Oh I don't know Shahrukh, my wife is the most beautiful woman in the world. |
Gold Member Username: NuckPost Number: 3268 Registered: Dec-04 | I didn't know your wife read the forum, MR! LOL |
Silver Member Username: ShahrukhdMumbai, Maharashtra India Post Number: 143 Registered: Nov-04 | Yeah My Rantz, like u said... he hasn't heard YOUR system! |
Gold Member Username: ChitownPost Number: 1142 Registered: Apr-05 | I don't know about that Shahrukh. The most beautiful woman in the world is in your neck of the wood and her name is Aishwarya Rai. My Rantz's wife notwithstanding. My wife agrees btw. Somehow the dude had to attract people to look at the article. Somehow "A pretty good old stereo speakers" wouldn't have done the job. |
Silver Member Username: My_rantzAustralia Post Number: 654 Registered: Nov-05 | Nuck - one never knows does one? Anyway, like audio components, it's what's in the inside that really counts. |
