I was wondering, what would be the best way to connect my laptop to my Yamaha RXV557 receiver which is currently running with two Polk RTi6s in order to minimize sound degradation. Thanks

use an external soundcard, like this:

Without going that method, which is slightly out of my price range ( I am a a college studentand received the previous equipment for graduation gift)what is the most economical way with the best sound qaulity to connect my laptop to the receiver and thus use iTunes as my library.

I used a cable with a 3.5mm jack at either end to connect my minidisc player to my laptop when I wanted to record from my laptop to my minidisc player.

You could use one of these to connect the headphone socket of your laptop to the microphone in socket of your receiver (possibly requiring an adaptor to get the right size).

I connected the cable into the headphone socket of the laptop and then into the input socket of the minidisc player.

It was a cheap solution. I suspect the quality will not be fantastic but for the price of a cable it is worth trying out especially if it is only needed as a short(ish) fix.

the external sound card is the best option. This is about the cheapest and will work OK for you...
