Ok, I just bought a DVD-audio capable DVD player. I have heard that the using the 5.1 audio inputs will give me the best sound. But will that give me the best sound when playing regular CD's or DVD. Or should I stick to the optical audio inputs

It depends on the quality of D/A converters in the player compared to those in the receiver/amp - try both analogue and digital and make your choice.
