$5-700 speakers for analog system?

I'm running a Project Xperience with a Grado Red cartridge into a Sony reciever right now. Just purchased a Sonic Impact T-Amp and tc-754 preamp, and the parts for a Gainclone.

I'm currently listening thru two pretty terrible KLH floorstanding speakers. 15" woofers in the "rave" series. For one, these aren't going to be efficient enough for the t-amp, and also my taste has changed a lot since I bought these a few years back. I'm looking at spending preferably under $500, but up to $750 or so for a pair of the right speakers. What do you suggest? I do prefer floorstanding to bookshelf.

Check out the Athena ASF 2.2 or the Ascend Acoustics CMT-340

Forget the two way's and the commercial packaging of the sound.

This is the only way to go with an amp such as the Sonic T. There is no crossover to eat up the precious few watts you have available. A single full range driver offers coherence and, in this case, sensitivity. You will be astonished at the results.

I would recommend the Ling but I doubt the T amp could drive it to a loud enough volume for most people.

The Aria would work but it's above the stated budget.

You may want to consider Ed Schilling's Horn which is still slightly above your budget.

Another offering, again higher than you're suggesting, is Bob Brines' FT1600

These are the type of speakers you may want to consider if you expect the SI T-amp to give you room filling sound. If it's for a personal stereo in the near field the Ling will work well, especially the Ling Single.

If a full-range driver is the way to go, I wonder if I'm not better off doing something along the lines of the "Big Fun Box" over at TNT-Audio...

That is what you have to decide on your own. We can only offer the suggestions which we feel would suit your request. I would suggest you do some reading on the benefits of low wattage amplifiers driving full range drivers.

This may sound very stupid, but why are you using a $1000 turntable and looking for $500 - $750 speakers to use with a $20 amp?
