I am thinking of getting HK 635 receiver, but am in a dilemma selecting the speakers. I listened infinity beta and like them with HK. But they are bit bulky in look, so I thought about the primus series. However could not read a lot about that series on the internet. Please let me know your thoughts. I do not want to spend more that $1500 for the speakers and the sub and will be mostly (90%) with my HT.

Jacob, your H/K receiver selection will open up a lot of speaker options.
The 635 will drive 4ohm speakers quite well, and 4ohm speakers are available in good quantities and qualities in you price range.

However, what is your dvd player now?
Important to find out, as the rears may not be as high$ as the front 3.

Are you in a place where BIG bass is a favorable attribute?

Do you want smaller(on stands speakers) to avoid the bulk?
How big is the room, and, will you move to a bigger space in the forseeable future?

Jake, your answers to these questions would help us give you better advice:

1. What types of movies do you watch the most? (action/thriller, drama/comedy, etc.)

2. How big is your listening/viewing room?

3. Is the room on the ground floor or upstairs?

4. Do you live in an apartment or detached house?

I really enjoy Polk apeaker with my HK 430. Check out the Rti line, they sound great handling just about anything.

I have old DVD player by JVC, time for change, may change it later. Yes Bass is important for me. I would prefer floor standing speakers, room size is 20' by 20'.

I watch all kind of moviex, its really a mix of all. The room is on the ground floor one a sigle floor of a detached house.

I will check out the Rti line.
Thanks for all your inputs.

The RTi floorstanders are not bad, I have never been much impressed by their bookshelves though. Neither are a particularly good value for the money. The RTi towers start at $700 a pair for the RTi8 online (crutchfield.com), which will not leave you with much the other 3 speakers plus subwoofer.

The thing is, if you get a good subwoofer (which is essential in HT, especially for action movies) you really don't need floorstanders since they will be crossed over at 60 or 80 Hz anyways. Bookshelves will do the same if not better job of handling your mids and highs, while taking less power from your receiver and also saving you money to get a better subwoofer. A good sub that is properly placed will go much lower, cleaner, and louder than any floorstander in this price range.

For $1500, in a 90% HT system, this is what I'd get:

CMT-340 center
CBM-170 L/R
CBM-170 surrounds
Hsu STF-3 subwoofer
$1541 shipped from ascendacoustics.com

Read up on the Hsu sub here: hsuresearch.com and on the Ascend speakers:

http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/reviews/proreviews.html

Both are exceptionally high bang-for-your-buck Internet-direct products, and have enjoyed glowing reviews by both professionals and consumers.

Check this map and post on the Ascend forum to see if there are any Ascend owners in your neck of the woods who might let you come listen:

http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/showthread.php?t=1427

A lower cost option would be to look at the Athena speakers at audioadvisor.com --- these are a tad brighter out of the box than the Ascends but your HK should be able to tame them.

The Athena F2.2 floorstanders ($400 shipped) would not break your budget if you really must have floorstanders, btw.

The bookshelves and center though are amazingly good for their price: 2 pairs AS-B1s + 1 AS-C1 center = $300 shipped

That would let you add the top of the line Hsu VTF-3 ($780 shipped) or if you REALLY want to rattle the windows of all the houses within a 1/2 mile radius, a monstrous 140lb. SVS Plus 12/2 ($1300 shipped):

I liked this one below suggested.
CMT-340 center
CBM-170 L/R
CBM-170 surrounds
Hsu STF-3 subwoofer
$1541 shipped from ascendacoustics.com

Instead of Hsu STF-3, can I go for the Hsu STF-2, will it make a lot of difference ? There is a $200 differnce and thinking of saving that. Please tell me your honest opinion. Thanks for all the help.

I looked at ascend map and they do not have anybody nearby, I could go and listen. I have send an email to site admin asking for anybody nearby. But from what I heard and read, it seems it will do good with HK 635.

I guess I have to get the stands for the (4) CBM-170's. What kind of stands should I get, can I get them in circuit city or similar place ?

STF-3 you'll definitely have plenty of headroom for the most demanding movies and music, with STF-2 in your 20x20 room it might be cutting it a little close...really depends on just how much bass you like/want.

Yes, the Ascends go very well with the HK, that's why Ascend carries HK receivers on their website (you have to call them and ask for prices though, they might give you a nice deal if you bundle everything together).

Personally I have the 340s up front and have found that they combine beautifully with the $230 all-digital Panasonic sa-xr55. What I'd do is order it from Amazon and see how you like it, if thumbs down it's just $15 to ship it back...if thumbs up, you can spend the savings on the STF-3 very comfortably.

It's a massive PARADIGM SHIFT...jaw-dropping detail with zero distortion and bottomless power compared to analog receivers costing several times more. I was shocked to discover that it effortlessly outperformed AND outpowered my beloved NAD separates which would cost about 6 times as much brand new! Not to mention my Marantz 5400 that's about triple its (the Panny's) cost.

I bought it for 2-channel music but found that it does HT extremely well, due to the unbelievable clarity and ample power.

Read up on what all the buzz is about, if anything deserves the term "giant-killer" this is it! A couple of threads about this receiver on different forums:

https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-audio/160136.html

http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/showthread.php?t=1251&page=1&p p=10

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=530504

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=417894

A few caveats---very minor IMHO at this pricepoint: no pre-outs (would negate the whole point of a digital amp after all), subwoofer crossover only down to 80Hz, no room speaker EQ, primitive remote, no digital outputs, no OSD (onscreen display). Also may not be the best choice if you have lousy, overly bright speakers.

Just as some folks still prefer LPs to CDs and tubes to solid state, you might decide to stick with an analog receiver, I'll make no guarantees. But it's definitely worth hearing it to make up your own mind, in any case.

Here are some stands I bought which I've been very happy with, they look good, were easy to assemble and very reasonably priced:

http://www.wood-tech.com/product.php?cat=ss&series=mu

http://www.amazon.com/s/?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=mu-30

It's usually very hard to find good speaker stands locally; selection is usually poor and prices grossly inflated. Here are some good online sources:

partsexpress.com
hififorless.com
cousinsvideo.com
racksandstands.com (a little expensive but huge selection)
accessories4less.com
